Bombers written by David Wragg and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-23 with History categories.

The role of the bomber has proved to be on of the most controversial aspects of twentieth-century warfare. Bombers tells the story of the bomber with a blend of narrative and personal accounts, recording the history of the principle bombing raids and the skill and courage of those who flew them. David Wragg begins with a brief overview of the origins of the concept of aerial bombardment, which astonishingly go back several thousand years. He then describes the early raids of the First World War and the use of the bomber between the wars by the Germans in the Spanish Civil War, the Italians in Abyssinia and by the Japanese in China. The Second World War marked the massive deployment of the bomber by the main combatants as a major tactical and strategic weapon and, bringing this in-depth study up to date, Wragg examines the United States controversial campaign of extensive bombing in Vietnam during the 1960s and 70s. He also discusses whether, with the growing use of cruise missiles, the manned bomber may soon be the first element of air power to be made redundant in this age of high technology. Fully illustrated with a wide selection of photographs, Bombers will appeal to all with an interest in this key weapon of twentieth-century warfare.

Fighting the Bombers is an unrivaled look at the Allied bombing campaign from the point of view of the Luftwaffe establishment and command. The contributing authors were involved in all aspects of German attempts to stem the unrelenting bombardment from the RAF and USAAF; from tactics in the sky and development of the planes themselves, to long term strategy and planning on the ground, and the implementation of sophisticated radio and radar equipment. These reports were written immediately after the war, in 1945 and 1946 when most of the authors were prisoners of war, and for the most part were prepared without the aid of official documentation and records. As such they represent a view not coloured by reflection or by 'party lines' that became established in the post-war years, and clearly show the development of the Luftwaffe—particularly the tactics and equipment used for night flying—as the war progressed and give a clear history of attempts to defend the Reich from aerial attack. The book also benefits from having been written specifically for an audience well-versed in military aviation affairs, the allied aviation and intelligence services. The detail contained in the reports is unique and allows the reader a fresh perspective on this famous campaign.Fighting the Bombers is an unrivaled look at the Allied bombing campaign from the point of view of the Luftwaffe establishment and command. Dresden And The Heavy Bombers written by Frank Musgrove and has been published by Pen and Sword this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-01 with History categories.

This is the story of a young man's entry into the war in 1941 and culminates in his flying on the bombing raid to Dresden in February 1945. This is not a gung-ho account of flying with Bomber Command but neither is it a breast-beating avowal of guilt. These memoirs take the form of a basic narrative of the author's RAF career and pay particular attention to fear, morale and, as the author explains, the myth of leadership. Several raids are described in detail and illustrate the variety of experience, problems and dangers involved in such hazardous warfare. So, nearly 60 years after his dramatic experiences, how does he view the bombing of factories and cities and the inevitable grave moral issues that have slowly and insidiously crept up on him ? The answer will surprise many younger and older readers.

Searching For The Hudson Bombers written by James R. Stevens and has been published by Trafford Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This exciting and unusual World War Two book contains the biographies of young men from the United States and Commonwealth Countries who flew through enemy infested skies in a civilian passenger plane known as the Hudson Bomber. The author portrays not only flyers but their families as they face the unfolding fates of their youngsters flying in Royal Air Force Coastal Command Squadrons. Much of the book is written from primary research material: personal diaries, log books, a large number of photographs and anxious letters home to parents and wives and friends. "Searching For The Hudson Bombers" rings loudly with authenticity of how World War Two impacted people at an intimate and personal level. Flying duties of these patriotic youth from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa are portrayed in a range of activities from over the North Sea to the Mediterranean. The Hudson air crews bomb shipping and search in all kinds of nasty weather for submarines, cover convoys and look for downed air craft. Sub themed in the text are the disappointing activities of politicians, corporations, financial institutions and religious bureaucracy. One will not find much grand strategy as planned by Presidents, Prime Ministers and Generals in, "Searching For The Hudson Bombers." This is a book about unheralded flyers who risked their lives each time they went aloft in a less than reliable aircraft, the Hudson Bomber. This intriguing and intensely researched work exposes the truly human side of one of history's most cataclysmic events. An excellent read!" Major General (Ret'd) Lewis W. MacKenzie OStJ,OOnt,MSC,CD. "Poignant stories of young men in the prime of life who risked their lives fighting for their countries." Ms.Lynn McLeod, B.A. M.L.S. Mississauga Public Library System "I spent many hours as navigator of a Hudson and I find the research done to compile this wonderfully researched volume to be absolutely mind-boggling. F/Lt. 205 Group RAF provided the only mobile force of heavy night bombers in the Mediterranean theater in the Second World War. It operated mainly from bases in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Italy, with occasional excursions to Malta, Greece and Iraq, attacking tactical and strategic targets according to the demands of the wider war in the theater. The force was relatively small when compared with the numbers of aircraft available to Bomber Command in the Western European theater, and it carried on using the venerable Vickers Wellington long after this aircraft had been relegated to the training role in the United Kingdom.Like their UK-based counterparts the night bombers were intended to operate in a strategic role, bombing targets away from the immediate battlefront. However, the demands of the war in the Middle East and Mediterranean soon diverted the bombers from their strategic role and saw them operating much closer to the front line in support of the hard pressed ground forces. The bomber squadrons in North Africa usually operated from Advanced Landing Grounds scraped out of the bare desert, with only a few tents for shelter. In Italy they did have more or less permanent bases, but they still lived in tents (if they were lucky) often surrounded by a sea of mud. There were no pubs, often no beer, and the only contact with their families were the eagerly awaited letters from home. Also the squadrons in England did not have Rommel continually knocking on their door. Thus, the operations of the night bombers in the Middle East and Mediterranean were often governed by the general progress of the war in the theater. The ebb and flow of the land battles not only determined the activities of the night bombers, but also determined their location. This book tells their story.
