We study the relationship between in utero exposure to military exercises and children’s early-life health outcomes in a no-war zone. This allows us to document non-economic impacts of military activity on neonatal health outcomes. We combine monthly data on tonnage of ordnance in the context of naval exercises in Vieques, Puerto Rico, with the universe of births in Puerto Rico between 1990 and 2000; studying this setting is useful because these exercises have no negative consequences for local economic activity. We find that a one standard deviation increase in exposure to bombing activity leads to a three per thousand point (70 percent) increase in extremely premature births; a three to seven per thousand point – 34 to 77 percent – increase in the incidence of congenital anomalies; and a five per thousand point increase in low APGAR scores (38 percent). The evidence is generally consistent with the channel of environmental pollution. Given the well-documented relationship between neonatal health and later life outcomes, there is reason to believe that our substantial short-term effects may have longer-term consequences for this population.

For most of that time she resided in eastern Surrey about 20 miles from the southern outskirts of London. As part of ‘Bomb Alley’ her area of the county experienced air raids as well as V1 and V2 attacks. She was a war bride, having been married in 1940 to a Canadian army officer who served on the staff of the 1st Canadian Army in England, France and Holland. The author has extensively annotated the diary entries and added considerable historical background in relation to both domestic and military matters. The book describes in detail what life was like for a woman starting a family and keeping house in the English countryside during World War 2, and how different were lifestyles then from what they are today. In revisiting the circumstances surrounding his and his sister’s birth, the journey for the author was one of personal revelation as well as historical interest.

This paper studies the association between exposure to Boko Haram's attacks and households' fertility choices in Nigeria. In our model, parents decide not only how many children they want to have, but also how much they want to invest in them. The model's predictions suggest that households exposed to terrorism increase their number of children as a way to insure against future unexpected shocks and reduce investment in their offspring. We test the predictions of the model using geolocalized panel data linked to information on terrorist attacks that occurred in the region. Consistent with the theory, terrorism is found to increase fertility (proxied by the number of surviving children per household) and decrease parental investment (proxied by child malnutrition). The first association is robust to the use of difference-in-differences and instrumental variables models - and therefore can be given a causal interpretation - but the second is not.

Half a century after the CIA's Secret War in Laos—the largest bombing campaign in history—explosive remnants of war continue to be part of people's everyday lives. In Bomb Children Leah Zani offers a perceptive analysis of the long-term, often subtle, and unintended effects of massive air warfare. Zani traces the sociocultural impact of cluster submunitions—known in Laos as “bomb children”—through stories of explosives clearance technicians and others living and working in these old air strike zones. Zani presents her ethnography alongside poetry written in the field, crafting a startlingly beautiful analysis of state terror, authoritarian revival, rapid development, and ecological contamination. In so doing, she proposes that postwar zones are their own cultural and area studies, offering new ways to understand the parallel relationship between ongoing war violence and postwar revival.
