Sainte-Beuve hat ihn als "esprit cosmopolite, européen" porträtiert. Seiner Mehrsprachigkeit, seiner Kultur der Konversation, dem weiten Horizont seines Intellekts sowie seiner geistigen und politischen Liberalität ist es zu verdanken, daß Bonstetten in höherem Alter in Genf von ganz unterschiedlichen Menschen aus aller Welt aufgesucht wurde und daß seine Briefkorrespondenz ins Unermeßliche wuchs. Er gilt heute als Leitfigur für die Erforschung der europäischen Übergangszeit zwischen dem Ancien régime und der Moderne. Die historisch-kritische Edition der "Bonstettiana" - der Titel ist Bonstettens eigene Prägung - erschließt zum erstenmal die ganze Breite seiner Briefkorrespondenzen. Neuartig und aufschlußreich ist die mehrstimmige Anlage der Edition, die Polyphonie. Die Briefwechsel zwischen Bonstetten und seinen Korrespondenten werden ergänzt durch Briefwechsel zwischen seinen wichtigsten Partnern. Die Mehrstimmigkeit erstreckt sich über die Jahre 1753 bis 1832 und über den gesamten europäischen Raum. Punktuell werden Auszüge aus bisher unveröffentlichten Tagebüchern eingeflochten. Der vorliegende vierte Band der Edition, die auf 14 Bände angelegt ist und durch eine Edition der Werke Bonstettens ergänzt wird, umfaßt die Jahre 1780 bis 1784, die Bonstettens Freund Johannes von Müller in Berlin (Audienz bei Friedrich dem Großen) und Kassel (Geschichtsprofessur, Neufassung der Universalgeschichte) verbringt. Der Band erweitert den Korrespondentenkreis um zahlreiche Briefbeziehungen, die Müller in Deutschland aufnimmt, und enthält bisher ungedruckte Briefwechsel, u.a. mit Gleim, F. H. Jacobi und dem hessischen Minister Schlieffen.

This book examines the ways in which the Swiss defined their national identity in the long nineteenth century, in the face of a changing domestic and international background. Its narrative begins in 1761, when the first Swiss patriotic society of national significance was founded, and ends in 1891, when the Swiss celebrated their 600-year existence as a nation in a monumental national festival. While conceding that the creation of a nation-state in 1848 marked a watershed in the history of Swiss nation-formation, the author does not focus one-sidedly - as many others have done - on the activities of the nationalizing state. Instead, he attributes a key role to the competitive and contentious struggles over the shaping of public institutions and over the symbolic representation of the nation. These struggles, to which the nation-state and civil society contributed in equal measure, were framed increasingly along national lines.
