Gebrakan dan karyanya yang bernuansa profesionalitas-kompetensi itu sangat fenomenal mewarnai pembangunan di bumi Kutai Timur, bahkan menerobos hingga ke wilayah Provinsi Kalimantan Timur (Kaltim). Diberikan amanah memimpin Kabupaten Kutai Timur, sejumlah prestasi dan berbagai penghargaan mengalir tiada henti, sebagai wujud pengakuan atas leadership-nya yang unggul, berkualitas, dan mumpuni. Sosoknya sendiri sangat unik, bahkan terbilang kompleks. Oleh publik, tokoh berambut perak ini memiliki julukan beragam: ia disebut birokrat karir, karena menapaki kariernya dari bawah dan lebih 30 tahun mengabdi sebagai pamongpraja. Awang juga kerapkali disebut maestro dari Kutai Timur karena mampu melahirkan karya-karya pembangunan yang fenomenal bagi daerahnya. Selain itu, ia dijuluki pula birokrat entrepreneur, lantaran sangat sedikit para birokrat yang mampu mengelola daerahnya dengan pola pikir dan paradigma manajemen korporasi. Bahkan, karena ketidaklaziman pemikiran serta kecerdasan visinya yang terlampau maju itulah, Awang dijuluki “Bupati CEO.” Boleh jadi, julukan Bupati CEO ini satu-satunya yang cuma disandang Awang Faroek dari 476 bupati/walikota di seluruh Indonesia.
