O estado de Santa Catarina possui um conhecimento significativo acerca de sua biodiversidade, possuindo informações sobre suas aves, mamíferos, peixes, anfíbios, formigas, e flora em geral, por meio dos trabalhos da Flora Ilustrada Catarinense iniciados por Raulino Reitz. Com o objetivo de contribuir para este conhecimento, o presente trabalho teve como base a lista das espécies de Lepidoptera (borboletas e mariposas) registradas em Santa Catarina e compiladas por Piovesan e colaboradores, com acréscimo de novos registros pessoais e informações de diversos livros e artigos adicionais, resultando no registro de 1637 espécies de borboletas e mariposas. Neste trabalho são apresentadas informações sobre origem, evolução e biologia em geral da ordem Lepidoptera (borboletas e mariposas) e informações sobre 37 famílias desta ordem que ocorrem em Santa Catarina e mais de 300 fotos.

Neste livro nós reunimos informações sobre adultos e imaturos de borboletas ocorrentes no município de Joaçaba, localizado no meio-oeste de Santa Catarina. As espécies registradas aqui se distribuem também por grande parte da Floresta Atlântica, outras ainda adentrando biomas como o Cerrado e a Amazônia. Esta obra contém 2.273 imagens correspondentes a 447 espécies. Destas, há imagens de 446 espécies preparadas com as asas esticadas, 178 espécies registradas no ambiente natural e 89 espécies com imagens dos imaturos. Adicionalmente, há informações a respeito dos meses de ocorrência, de alguns hábitos e caracterização morfológica dos adultos e imaturos, além do registro de plantas hospedeiras. Desta forma, associando imagens desses belíssimos insetos à descrição de hábitos e demais características das espécies, nós objetivamos auxiliar na divulgação de informações científicas também ao público leigo, buscando atrair uma maior parcela da sociedade ao conhecimento da grande diversidade de insetos neotropicais.

This checklist does not supercede any other because it is the first of its kind for the Neotropical region. It represents the cUlmination of several years preparation by the con tributing authors and editor, following the initiation of the "Atlas" project in the autumn of 1978. The collaborators to the project continue their work, either for "Atlas" fascicles or for the more immediate completion of the remaining five parts of the checklist. The goal of the project is to provide a foundation work on the Neotropical Lepidoptera, illustrated to the extent possible and encompassing a detailed text covering the basic data known for each described species (original citation, synonymy, diagnosis, range, flight per iod and hosts). New species will be described as each author finds useful, but the primary purpose is initially to document all the species already known. Efforts to document the Lepidoptera faunas of individual countries in Latin America are relatively illogical, since in most cases upwards of 80% of the entire Neotropical fauna is represented in each coun try having tropical forest and, thus, such works would have to deal with most of the conti nental fauna. The "Atlas" project covers the entire region to begin with but as a coopera tive project among all New World nations.
