Ce premier "Féret", publié en 1850 par notre maison, a plus 160 ans d'existence. Il demeure ainsi le plus ancien ouvrage français créé et toujours publié par le même éditeur. A croire que le vin précède souvent bien d'autres formes de culture et dans tous les cas, il les accompagne merveilleusement. Son auteur, Charles Cocks, est né à Londres en 1812, et décédé le 31 mai 1854 à Bordeaux. Il arriva à Bordeaux au début des années 1840. Voulant mieux faire connaître à ses compatriotes la région bordelaise, son histoire, ses monuments et ses activités, il écrivit Bordeaux, its wines and the claret country, publié à Londres en 1846 par les éditions Longman. C'était un guide touristique dont une partie était consacrée aux vins de Bordeaux. Ce même ouvrage, mais en français et avec une partie consacrée au vin beaucoup plus développée, est devenu le Féret". Cette première édition de Bordeaux et ses vins classe les crus par "ordre de mérite" dans chaque commune, ce qui n'avait jamais été fait jusqu'alors. Elle contient aussi une classification des grands crus de la Gironde. La classification officielle de 1855 établie par les courtiers de Bordeaux à la demande de Napoléon III pour l'Exposition universelle, présente de très grandes similitudes avec celle-ci. L'histoire est à découvrir, la genèse d'un classement également. Il ne fut pas le fait d'un jour, mais bien le résultat d'une longue observation... Un cadeau incontournable pour tous les passionnés de vins de Bordeaux !
