Globalization, made possible by the microelectronic revolution in communication and transportation that shrouds the planet like a giant hairnet, has rendered the borders of nations porous, economically, politically and culturally. Economically, goods and services flow to and from countries to be produced, distributed, and consumed in a race to the top for the highest profits and to the bottom for the lowest costs and prices. Politically, no country is any longer isolated and immune from the turmoil and travail that continue to wreak havoc on the human community, be it military conflict and violence or environmental destruction and degradation. Culturally, globalization is like a steamroller, demolishing indigenous societies and cultures, and flattening them into a consumerist McWorld of values and attitudes, of tastes and styles. Geographical barriers and temporal seasons do not matter much anymore. In truth and in fact, globalization has meant the compression of time and space. To be a citizen today is to be a global citizen. At a minimum, it means to be aware of and to know the contours and the dynamics of the forces, external to city, state, and nation, that impinge on and impact our lives, our fortunes, and our future. At a maximum, it demands involvement and participation in efforts at raising consciousness about global issues, at fighting greed and fraud that corrupt the globalization process, and in working for a global economy that redounds to the benefit of all, especially the less fortunate of the world. Global citizenship becomes the big challenge and the great responsibility of education. This requires that disciplines cross their narrow national borders and expand their horizons to take in the problems and concerns of the entire global village. Migrations are contested sites of identity negotiations: they are not simply a process of border crossings but more so of border shiftings. Rather than allowing migrants to swiftly move across stable borders from one clearly defined identity to another, migrations question and renegotiate these very identities. Migrations undermine and re-establish borders along which the identity of migrants (and also that of the supposedly settled population) are constituted, and, as a discourse, migrations serve as a contested site of negotiating identities. Migrations reveal the negotiable character of identities - and representations of migration are themselves a hotspot in contemporary identity constructions. What can theology contribute to the negotiations on migration? The contributions of this volume work towards a reading of migration as a sign of the times. Together, they offer "steps towards a theology of migration." They show that migration calls for a new way of doing. A theology that is exposed to migration as a sign of the times is drwan into the shifting, unsettling, and undermining of borders. This has impact not only on the discourse of migration, but also on the discourse of theology: it calls theology to move away from its search for well-established definitions (literally: borders) of its God-talk and to venture into new, uncharted territory. It loses its fixed, clearly defined grounds and finds itself on the way toward a renegotiation of what it means to believe in, celebrate, and reflect on YHWH - on God who is with us on the way.

Whether implicitly or explicitly, borders have always harboured profound theological meaning. The border is, on the one hand, an instrument to establish an identity by demarcating oneself from others, but, on the other hand, it can also be experienced as a possibility of exchange. From an anthropological point of view, it is both a limitation and a starting point. Because of this ambiguity, particular attention must be paid to the fragility of those who live “on the margins”, or “in magical territories” (Gloria Andalzua). Moreover, in our time, we observe a profound change in the existential experience of the “border”. The reasons are many: problems related to climate change, access to clean water and air, differences in development and economic and financial resources, political instability and violence are pushing more and more people around the world to cross borders. This crossing could be the figure of a new humanity and a new cohabitation, in which the religious and spiritual resources of each person and each group can have their own role. This book explores the contours of a transformational sociology which seeks to reconsider the horizons of sociological imagination.
