Nunca le mande a Borges la primera edicion de este libro. Sabia que no leia o tenia en escasa estima casi todo lo que se escribia sobre el. Opte por ahorrarle el trabajo de hacer lo primero y evitar una nueva ocasion de que ocurriera lo segundo. No me arrepiento de que asi haya sido, como no me arrepiento (o me digo que no me arrepiento) de no haberlo conocido mejor al hombre Borges. Siempre preferi trabajar con Borges, con las letras de Borges, de lejos. Solo asi, pienso, me era posible mantener la distancia b"es decirla mirada critica, la irreverencia, la extranezab" que sus textos recomiendan y que es condicion necesaria de su lectura. No se si es el libro que hoy escribiria sobre Borges, pero es un libro en el que plenamente me reconozco. Borges me enseno a escribir (o a leer, que es lo mismo) y me enseno a pensar: en ese orden. El libro fue y sigue siendo reconocimiento de esa deuda. Las revisiones de esta nueva version son minimas. He resistido a la tentacion de reescribir el texto sabiendo que, a veinte anos de su primera publicacion, inevitablemente ya es, aun sin revisiones, otro texto. He anadido al final ensayos escritos despues de la primera publicacion de LAS LETRAS DE BORGES. Escritos en ocasiones diversas, son y no son parte del libro. Retoman algunas ideas, algunos temas, pero lo enuncian diferentemente. He preferido incluirlos pero no integrarlos, dejarlos asi, en la orilla, para que dialoguen con el texto previo y acaso alguna vez lo contradigan. SYLVIA MOLLOY
