And so, in the meadow and forest so vast, where friendship bloomed like wildflowers and adventure danced like sunbeams, the legend of Boris and Gregg lives on. Their story became a timeless reminder that love knows no boundaries, and that you don't have to look alike to be family.

Among Golden Age Hollywood film stars of European heritage known for playing characters from the East--Chinese, Southeast Asians, Indians and Middle Easterners--Anglo-Indian actor Boris Karloff had deep roots there. Based on extensive new research, this biography and career study of Karloff's "eastern" films provides a critical examination of 41 features, including many overlooked early roles, and offers fresh perspective on a cinematic luminary so often labeled a "horror icon." Films include The Lightning Raider (1919), 14 silent films from the 1920s, The Unholy Night (1929), The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932), The Mummy (1932), John Ford's The Lost Patrol (1934), the Mr. Wong series (1938-1940), Targets (1968), and Isle of the Snake People (1971), one of six titles released posthumously.

From the beginning of the sound era until the end of the 1930s, independent movie-making thrived. Many of the independent studios were headquartered in a section of Hollywood called "Poverty Row." Here the independents made movies on the cheap, usually at rented facilities where shooting was limited to only a few days. From Allied Pictures Corporation to Willis Kent Production, 55 Poverty Row Studios are given histories in this book. Some of the studios, such as Diversion Pictures and Cresent Pictures, came into existence for the sole purpose of releasing movies by established stars. Others, for example J.D. Kendis, were early exploitation filmmakers under the guise of sex education. The histories include critical commentary on the studio's output and a filmography of all titles released from 1929 through 1940.

Howard Fast written by Gerald Sorin and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-05 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A biography of the Jewish American, left-wing author of Spartacus that explores his identity, his work, and his politics. Howard Fast’s life, from a rough-and-tumble Jewish New York street kid to the rich and famous author of close to one hundred books, rivals the Horatio Alger myth. Author of bestsellers such as Citizen Tom Paine, Freedom Road, My Glorious Brothers, and Spartacus, Fast joined the American Communist Party in 1943 and remained a loyal member until 1957, despite being imprisoned for contempt of Congress. Gerald Sorin illuminates the connections among Fast’s Jewishness, his writings, and his left-wing politics and explains Fast’s attraction to the Party and the reasons he stayed in it as long as he did. Recounting the story of his private and public life with its adventure and risk, love and pain, struggle, failure, and success, Sorin also addresses questions such as the relationship between modern Jewish identity and radical movements, the consequences of political myopia, and the complex interaction of art, popular culture, and politics in twentieth-century America. “A notable study of a thorny protagonist whose life has much to reveal about the times in which he lived and about the interplay of political belief, personal identity, art, and ambition.” —Publishers Weekly “Sorin . . . has written a heavily researched critical biography of Fast. . . . The volume’s strength is its explication and analysis of the complex social and political context of Fast’s activism and creative work. . . . Sorin’s lengthy critique of Fast’s adherence to Communism long after most American writers and intellectuals had abandoned the party, and his shameful public silence on Stalin’s crimes and Soviet anti-Semitism, are of significant import. . . . Recommended.” —Choice “An intriguing biography, not least for its examination of how Fast interwove his political activism, his Jewishness and his art during the heyday of McCarthyism. Recommended.” —Recorder (Melbourne)

IT’S NOT EVERY DAY YOU MEET AN AMATEUR SLEUTH WITH FANGS. “…a charming tale of dragons, deception, and dastardly deeds, and I loved every minute of it." “…an excellent read…[a] hilarious series” “Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down…it was that good!” “Light and fanciful with a darn good mystery woven in. What fun!” If you like fantastical mysteries that mix in laughs with murderous mayhem and mythical beasts, you’ll love the Circus of Unusual Creatures Mysteries. HEY EVERYONE, CORDELIA HERE. Duncan (aka "Deadliest Dragon in the West") has finally finished typing up the third sleuthing adventure he got us tangled up in. It’s the one that involves booze smuggling, dragon matchmaking, too much lemonade, and a unicorn having a very bad hair day. I’m not sure about Duncan calling it a "masterpiece of mystery,” but trust me, it's a good one. Especially when that unicorn has a wardrobe malfunction and Duncan becomes a victim of his own matchmaking. Of course, things aren’t all fun and games at Zin’s Circus of Unusual Creatures. We’ve got some pesky trainees driving us all batty, a police raid that threatens to shut the show down permanently, and, yes, a couple of confounding murders to solve. Now, while I go see what Pepper's cooking up in the Cantina, why not make a dragon's day by grabbing your own copy of Fangs a Million? And if you haven't started The Circus of Unusual Creatures series yet, I'm pretty sure you’ll love, not only this tale, but also Duncan's first two books: Hoard It All Before and Tipping the Scales. Note: While you can read The Circus of Unusual Creatures Mysteries on their own, you'll get far more out of the stories if you read the books in order.
