Il volume indaga il complesso rapporto di Borromini con Virgilio Spada e il fratello cardinale Bernardino, personaggi chiave della Roma barocca. Vengono ricostruite le vicende dell'ampliamento di palazzo Capodiferro, residenza romana del cardinale, attraverso l'inedito libro di cantiere e nuovi disegni del corpus borrominiano. Emerge il ruolo autoritario e fantasioso di Maria Veralli che aveva sposato nel 1636 Orazio Spada, nipote del cardinale. Per lei venne realizzato un nuovo appartamento su vicolo del Polverone. Prendendo spunto dalle scale progettate per palazzo Spada si presenta una analisi tipologica degli esemplari borrominiani di scale elicoidali e una accurata genealogia del tema e delle sue implicazioni simboliche. Le schede storiche e l'ampia appendice documentaria aprono interessanti squarci sulla operosità di Borromini e degli Spada connessa alle ville di Tivoli e di Frascati. Marisa Tabarrini, architetto e dottore di ricerca in Storia dell'architettura, insegna attualmente Storia dell'architettura moderna presso l 'Università di Roma La Sapienza. Tra le sue principali linee di ricerca, l'architettura italiana tra Seicento e Ottocento, la città barocca, la committenza artistica nobiliare a Roma e lo studio del cantiere architettonico. Ha svolto incarichi di ricerca presso il Centro di Studi sulla Cultura e l'Immagine di Roma; ha collaborato a varie mostre tra cui Giuseppe Piermarini (1998) e Roma barocca. Bernini, Borromini, Pietro da Cortona (2006).

Le prospettiva architettoniche sono un ponte che collega l’arte alla scienza, e la scienza all’arte; e questo ponte l’ha costruito la Storia. Perché, poi, questo ponte lo abbia gettato la Storia, è presto detto: le prospettive di soggetti architettonici sono già ben presenti a Ercolano e Pompei, nonché a Roma, nelle case di Augusto e di Livia e possono dirci molto sulle conoscenze ottiche e geometriche degli antichi. E sono ancora presenti in tutto il Medioevo, fino al Rinascimento, quando artisti-scienziati come Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti e Piero della Francesca, sperimentano e teorizzano le leggi della ‘costruzione legittima’. Da quel momento, Scienza e Prospettiva percorrono strade parallele, con un continuo scambio di conoscenze teoriche e sperimentali. Le prospettive architettoniche sono diffuse in tutta Italia e in Europa. Quindi la trasversalità della Prospettiva comprende il territorio, oltre alla Storia e alla cultura artistica e scientifica, in generale. Il primo obiettivo degli studi che questo volume presenta, è quello di costruire un repertorio delle prospettive architettoniche in Italia. Un secondo obiettivo è quello di dimostrare, quanto ricco e suggestivo sia il paesaggio del quale ci occupiamo. Un terzo obiettivo, è quello di documentare le prospettive con le tecniche più avanzate di rilevamento. Un quarto obiettivo è quello di svelare i segreti delle prospettive dal punto di vista della scienza della rappresentazione.
