Creating Space for Ourselves as Minoritized and Marginalized Faculty moves away from conventional faculty success books by providing early career faculty with innovative perspectives about successfully navigating the professoriate, while humanizing their lived experiences and naming the unspoken. Through the use of interdisciplinary methods, such as creative artistic expression, testimonios, and personal narratives, chapter authors share experiences learned about surviving, thriving, navigating, and succeeding as early career underrepresented and marginalized faculty. Chapters discuss issues such as navigating workplace hostility, finding community beyond the academy, work–life balance, and crafting a scholarly identity, while also offering little-known tips about how to survive the professoriate while growing into thriving minoritized and underrepresented scholars. This book explores personal and institutional factors that are seldom discussed in other career success books, helping faculty as well as institutional leaders understand how we can, individually and collectively, create systems that invite and recognize humanity while ensuring successful career pathways for marginalized folks with doctoral degrees.

A barrier in which all lines become one. But is it a leap too far?

Minority Voices From the Academic Superstructure is a critical conversation that bases its argument on interviews with Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) faculty from across the United States and a range of institutions, including large public and private universities, small liberal arts colleges, and mid-size public institutions. Using critical race theory (CRT) and postcolonial studies as the central theoretical frameworks, and critical race feminism as a supporting critical paradigm, the authors bring to attention some of the persistent challenges that BIPOC faculty face even in the twenty-first century. The book builds on a now well-established scholarly tradition on faculty experiences in the academy to support the following argument: While many gains have been made, the vestiges of colonization—which critical race theorists continue to highlight as persisting in current systems—still render the present-day academy a challenging space for BIPOC faculty. Through the powerful stories of success and resolve shared by study participants, the authors show that colleges and universities represent enormous—if challenging—sites of opportunity where the goals of advancing greater racial, ethnic, and gender equality both within and beyond the ivory tower can be pursued. Minority Voices From the Academic Superstructure also explores the challenges BIPOC faculty and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives will likely face in a political environment that is increasingly hostile to such efforts. This book covers topics such as minorities in education, systemic racism, intersectionality, immigrant experience, gendered experiences in education, and is a useful resource for academicians, education professionals, administrators, sociologists, historians, economists, and researchers.

Race Social Science And The Crisis Of Manhood 1890 1970 written by Malinda A. Lindquist and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with History categories.
We need look no further than our local and national newspapers to see that black males are in a state of crisis in the United States. This book explains not only how we have come to tell the story of the young black male crisis, but examines the gender of the American social science tradition from its white male supremacist foundations. This is a story of pioneering black social scientists as much as it is a history of the changing perceptions, ideals, and shifting depictions of black and white manhood over nearly a century. Offering a fresh perspective on the history of ideas of black manhood, author Malinda Lindquist builds upon the foundational works of gender, intellectual, and African American historians, as well as literary critics, arguing that much of what we think we know about black men is a product of how the social sciences have explicitly informed and subtly molded how we as a nation approach and answer the question, "Who are men?" She conveys how black social scientists’ theory of masculinist social change has been reduced over the decades from a wide-ranging political, cultural, scientific, and economic agenda to combat white male supremacy to an ever diminishing vision of the race crisis as a problem of the young black male that barely engages with the broader white male supremacist traditions of institutionalized violence, social injustice, and economic inequality. Until this masculinist social science tradition is replaced with a gender-neutral vision of democratic social change and a commitment to a radical equality of opportunity and outcome, we are likely to continue to identify black boys as the problem rather than as a provocative, masculinist, politically-potent symptom of the continuing significance of race and class in a troubled nation.
