Die Zukunft wird die Verbindung von Wissen- und Beziehungsentwicklung verlangen, um den Wettbewerbsvorteil zu sichern.1 Auf den ersten Blick wird eventuell nicht deutlich, was Wissen mit Beziehungen zu tun hat. Diese Wechselbeziehung wird offensichtlicher, wenn man sich folgende Frage vergegenwärtigt. Wie kann man Humankapital in Aufstiegschancen umsetzen? In der Theorie des sozialen Kapitals, beeinflusst das soziale Kapital den Ertrag des finanziellen Kapitals (ökonomisches Kapital) und des Humankapitals (Kulturkapital). Dies bedeutet, dass Menschen aus ihrem finanziellen und ihrem Humankapital nur das Optimum an Erträgen erzielen können, wenn sie genügend soziales Kapital besitzen. Aber was sind soziales und kulturelles Kapital und wie können sie effektiv akquiriert bzw. angewendet werden? Um diese Fragen und die Bedeutung der Beziehungen für das Wissen zu klären, möchte ich in meiner Arbeit die Kapital-Theorie von Pierre Bourdieu darlegen. Dabei werde ich hauptsächlich auf Bourdieus Text "Ökonomisches Kapital, kulturelles Kapital, soziales Kapital" eingehen, welches im Sonderband "Soziale Ungleichheiten" (Hg. Reinhard Kreckel) veröffentlicht wurde. Bourdieu möchte in seiner Arbeit alle Erscheinungsformen von Kapital und Profit beschreiben und Gesetze bestimmen, wie die Transformation zwischen den Kapitalsorten verläuft.2 Im laufe der Arbeit werde ich anhand von Beispielen verdeutlichen, was die einzelnen Kapitalsorten sind. Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. This volume will be of interest to sociologists, economists, social scientists, and the general consumer alike.

How do once bitter enemies move beyond entrenched rivalry at the diplomatic level? In one of the first attempts to apply practice theory to the study of International Relations, Vincent Pouliot builds on Pierre Bourdieu's sociology to devise a theory of practice of security communities and applies it to post-Cold War security relations between NATO and Russia. Based on dozens of interviews and a thorough analysis of recent history, Pouliot demonstrates that diplomacy has become a normal, though not a self-evident, practice between the two former enemies. He argues that this limited pacification is due to the intense symbolic power struggles that have plagued the relationship ever since NATO began its process of enlargement at the geographical and functional levels. So long as Russia and NATO do not cast each other in the roles that they actually play together, security community development is bound to remain limited.

The 2010 WikiLeaks release of 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables has made it eminently clear that there is a vast gulf between the public face of diplomacy and the opinions and actions that take place behind embassy doors. In At Home with the Diplomats, Iver B. Neumann offers unprecedented access to the inner workings of a foreign ministry. Neumann worked for several years at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he had an up-close view of how diplomats conduct their business and how they perceive their own practices. In this book he shows us how diplomacy is conducted on a day-to-day basis. Approaching contemporary diplomacy from an anthropological perspective, Neumann examines the various aspects of diplomatic work and practice, including immunity, permanent representation, diplomatic sociability, accreditation, and issues of gender equality. Neumann shows that the diplomat working abroad and the diplomat at home are engaged in two different modes of knowledge production. Diplomats in the field focus primarily on gathering and processing information. In contrast, the diplomat based in his or her home capital is caught up in the seemingly endless production of texts: reports, speeches, position papers, and the like. Neumann leaves the reader with a keen sense of the practices of diplomacy: relations with foreign ministries, mediating between other people’s positions while integrating personal and professional into a cohesive whole, adherence to compulsory routines and agendas, and, above all, the generation of knowledge. Yet even as they come to master such quotidian tasks, diplomats are regularly called upon to do exceptional things, such as negotiating peace.

This book explores the factors which govern the range of educational decisions confronting individuals between compulsory school education and university. The data on which it draws come from two surveys conducted in north-west Italy, one of unemployed young people and one of high-school pupils. The author is in effect testing the two fundamental and opposed paradigms of explanation which are generally applied in the sociology of education; one which holds that the individual agents are essentially passive, being either constrained by lack of alternatives or pushed by causal factors of which they are unaware; and the other in which they are regarded as capable of purposive action, of weighing the available alternatives with respect to some future rewards.
