A pictorial survey of the Class 14 locomotive’s twenty-year history in British industry. In 1957 the Western Region of British Railways identified a need for 400 Type 1 diesel locomotives for short-haul freight duties, but it was 1964 before the first was introduced. General-purpose Type 1s were being delivered elsewhere but WR management regarded these as too expensive for their requirements. After completion of design work on the ‘Western’ locomotives, Swindon turned to creating a cheap ‘no-frills’ Type 1. At 65% of the cost of the Bo-Bo alternative, the Swindon 0-6-0 represented a better ‘fit’ for the trip-freight niche. Since 1957 the privatised road-haulage industry had decimated BR’s wagon-load sector; whilst the 1962 Transport Act released BR from its financially-debilitating public-service obligations, the damage had been done, and the 1963 Beeching Plan focused on closing unprofitable routes and associated services. By 1963 the original requirement for 400 Type 1s had been massively reduced. Fifty-six locomotives were constructed in 1964/65. Continuing traffic losses resulted in the whole class becoming redundant by 1969. Fortuitously, a demand for high-powered diesels on the larger industrial railway systems saw the bulk of the locomotives finding useful employment for a further twenty years. This companion book to “Their Life on British Railways” provides an extensive appraisal of “Their Life in Industry” for the forty-eight locomotives which made the successful transition after withdrawal from BR in 1968/69. “Inside is the most extensive published work on Class 14s in industry with illustrations, tabulated data, complete dates and records, plus information and maps about the coal and steel sites at which they worked. Comprehensive.” —Trackside magazine “The amount of detail and level of research is impressive, and this series of books is invaluable for anyone interested in modern traction history.” —Railways Illustrated

Black Diamonds written by Catherine Bailey and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-30 with History categories.

From the New York Times–bestselling author of The Secret Rooms, the extraordinary true story of the downfall of one of England’s wealthiest families Fans of Downton Abbey now have a go-to resource for fascinating, real-life stories of the spectacular lives led by England’s aristocrats. With the novelistic flair and knack for historical detail Catherine Bailey displayed in her New York Times bestseller The Secret Rooms, Black Diamonds provides a page-turning chronicle of the Fitzwilliam coal-mining dynasty and their breathtaking Wentworth estate, the largest private home in England. When the sixth Earl Fitzwilliam died in 1902, he left behind the second largest estate in twentieth-century England, valued at more than £3 billion of today’s money—a lifeline to the tens of thousands of people who worked either in the family’s coal mines or on their expansive estate. The earl also left behind four sons, and the family line seemed assured. But was it? As Bailey retraces the Fitzwilliam family history, she uncovers a legacy riddled with bitter feuds, scandals (including Peter Fitzwilliam’s ill-fated affair with American heiress Kick Kennedy), and civil unrest as the conflict between the coal industry and its miners came to a head. Once again, Bailey has written an irresistible and brilliant narrative history.

British Gods written by Steve Bruce and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-28 with Religion categories.

The big picture is well-known: over the last century, religion in Britain has lost power, popularity, and plausibility. Here, Steve Bruce charts the quantifiable changes in religious interest and observance over the last fifty years by returning to a number of towns and villages that were the subject of detailed community studies in the 1950s and 1960s, to see how the status and nature of religion has changed. Drawing on both detailed data on baptism rates, church weddings, church attendance and the like, and on his extensive fieldwork, he considers the broader picture of religion today: the status of the clergy, the churches' attempts to find new roles, links between religion and violence, and the impact of the charismatic movement. Along the way, Bruce encounters and engages with the contemporary rise of secularism, considering our everyday secular tensions with religion: arguments over moral issues such as abortion and gay rights, the effect of social class on belief, the impact of religion on British politics, and the ways that local social structures strengthen or weaken religion. Analysing the obstacles to any religious revival, he explores how the current stock of religious knowledge is so depleted, religion so unpopular, and committed believers so scarce that any significant reversal of religion's decline in Britain is unlikely.

Rosalind's childhood was little different from that of her school friends, except that she did not attend school very much. But home-life was not child's play either when you lived with a violent father, whose shadow lay across her childhood like the smoke that drifted and fell from every chimney. Set in a Yorkshire mining village, Rosalind's story provides an insight into family and village life in the 1910s and 20s in a community that could teeter on the edge of starvation but still absorb an orphaned family of nine. But looming over it all was Rosalind's father, a man as tough as any in the pit who felt the need to keep proving it at home.
