Sowohl der Austausch zu bestimmten Themen oder Produkten in Communities als auch Empfehlungen oder Kritiken zu Marken, Unternehmen oder Angeboten machen einen großen Teil der Partizipation aus. Die aktive Teilnahme, die sich durch die Produktion sowie den Konsum von Inhalten auszeichnet, ist ein elementarer Bestandteil des Webs 2.0 geworden und gewinnt an kontinuierlich wachsender Bedeutung. Unternehmen mussten sich während der Etablierung der sozialen Plattformen damit befassen, wie sie sich innerhalb dieser platzieren und in welcher Form sie Marketing betreiben, da sich ein Großteil ihrer Kunden dort bewegt. Somit haben viele Unternehmen ihre Marketingaktivitäten auf Facebook, Twitter oder auch YouTube ausgeweitet und sind innerhalb dieser durch angelegte und moderierte Fan-Seiten oder Werbemaßnahmen präsent. Dadurch, dass zahlreiche Unternehmen aus unterschiedlichen Branchen auf den etablierten Plattformen aktiv sind, konnten umfassende branchenspezifische Handlungsempfehlungen, Marketingstrategien und Vorgehensweisen identifiziert werden, nach denen diese sich richten können. Durch die wachsenden Nutzerzahlen auf den neuen Plattformen stehen sie jedoch erneut vor der Herausforderung, auch auf diesen aktiv zu werden und ihre Zielgruppe durch Marketingaktivitäten zu erreichen. Das Problem, mit dem sich die meisten Unternehmen auseinandersetzen müssen, ist die Herangehensweise an die neuen Plattformen, weil noch keine etablierten, branchenspezifischen Richtlinien bestehen. Fragen, die damit einhergehen, sind beispielsweise welche Inhalte sich bewähren, in welchen zeitlichen Abständen Inhalte geteilt werden sollten oder wie die höchste Interaktion erzeugt werden kann. Um diese Fragen zu beantworten, ist eine Analyse erforderlich, die sich mit den Erfolgsfaktoren und den Vorgehensweisen bisher erfolgreicher Accounts unterschiedlicher Branchen auseinandersetzt. Aufgrund der hohen Anzahl neuer Plattformen beschränkt sich diese Arbeit auf die Analyse der Marketingaktivitäten auf der sozialen Plattform Instagram, da diese im Zeitraum von Januar bis September 2014 den größten Nutzerzuwachs aller sozialen Plattformen erzielte.
