Although the game of soccer is known by many names around the world—football, fútbol, Fußball, voetbal—the sport is a universal language. Throughout the past century, governments have used soccer to further their diplomatic aims through a range of actions including boycotts, carefully orchestrated displays at matches, and more. In turn, soccer organizations have leveraged their power over membership and tournament decisions to play a role in international relations. In Soccer Diplomacy, an international group of experts analyzes the relationship between soccer and diplomacy. Together, they investigate topics such as the use of soccer as a tool of nation-state–based diplomacy, soccer as a non-state actor, and the relationship between soccer and diplomatic actors in subnational, national, and transnational contexts. They also examine the sport as a conduit for representation, communication, and negotiation. Drawing on a wealth of historical examples, the contributors demonstrate that governments must frequently address soccer as part of their diplomatic affairs. They argue that this single sport—more than the Olympics, other regional multisport competitions, or even any other sport—reveals much about international relations, how states attempt to influence foreign views, and regional power dynamics.

Jackie, Tito, Marlon, Jermaine, Randy and Michael. Only one of them left very early, the lead vocalist Michael Jackson, yet the sheen, the legacy of the band The Jacksons, formerly known as Jackson 5, remains alive forever! The Five Brothers from Gary, Indiana, United States, have always been very close. The brothers formed the band with the exception of Randy who joined the band in 1976 when the group became The Jacksons and were hired by Sony, Jermaine stayed on the old record label, remained 5 members but named The Jacksons. In 1984 at the last meeting in Victory , Jermaine joined the band and for the only time we had all the brothers reunited, in this case the Jacksons Six if we could call it that. The band that packaged successes from 1969 to 1990, brought historical hits like ABC , I ll Be There , I Want You Back , Dancing Machine , among others by the former Motown label between 69 and 75, after this period continued to pack hits such as Blame It On The Boogie Shake Your Body Can You Feel It State Of Shock . The Jacksons were and are phenomena of success. Today they are back, doing their last tours around the world. In 1992 the TV brought the series American Dreams , for the author of this work, they went from an American Dream to a World Dream .

This book presents a kaleidoscopic view of the multidisciplinary field of research developed within Brazilian social sciences to study football as a major cultural and social phenomenon in the country. As a contributed volume, it brings together chapters authored by researchers from different disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology, political science, history, geography, economy, communication studies and physical education, who contributed to make Brazilian football a multifaceted object of study for the human and social sciences. The book is divided in four parts. The first two parts are dedicated to the "classic" areas, in which the best known research lines are concentrated: part one focuses on politics and history, while part two is dedicated to sociology and anthropology. The third part brings together studies from other four different areas: communication studies, geography, economy and physical education. The fourth part is organized not by disciplines, but around transversal themes, such as gender, violence, fans and racism. The varied approaches and different interpretations brought together in this book seek to provide an overview of the fertile academic debate that has stimulated the renewal of scientific research on football in Brazil, which makes Football and Social Sciences in Brazil a useful resource for researchers from different disciplines within the human and social sciences interested in the study of football as major cultural and social phenomenon all over the world.

What are the social, political and economic consequences of staging sport mega events such as the Olympics and the World Cup? Capitalism, Sport Mega Events and the Global South presents a new approach to sport mega events and related issues, exploring elements that are not present or are not developed in the existing literature. This book explores the socioeconomic impact of these events on host countries in the Global South. Drawing on a thorough case study of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, it examines how the residents of Porto Alegre perceived how they were affected and considers the relationship between sport mega events and the wider social sphere of global capitalism. Supported by original socioeconomic research conducted in the area, this is fascinating reading for all students and scholars interested in sport mega events, sport tourism, international development, sport geography and the sociology of sport.

Unsettling Brazil written by Desirée Poets and has been published by University of Alabama Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with History categories.

"In this work, Desirée Poets posits that contemporary Brazil is a settler colony. Based on ethnographic research and her experiences growing up in Brazil, the book tells the stories of communities in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte-two quilombos, two Indigenous movements, and a favela-to unravel the continuities and discontinuities of Brazil's settler colonial structure. As Poets argues, settler colonialism is renewed through expectations of Indigenous and quilombola authenticity as well as through militarization, incarceration, genocide, and marginalization that continuously attempt to dispossess and eliminate Black and Indigenous peoples from the political landscape, including in its urban centers. Placing these dynamics under one analytic lens, Poets navigates how the dependent settler capitalist state has related to different Indigenous and Black groups with distinct yet interrelated effects. She thereby challenges the still-common separation of Black and Indigenous politics and peoples in policy, activism, and scholarship. Building on the work of Black and Indigenous organizers and thinkers from Brazil and beyond, she makes the case for an intersectional and transnational lens that centers the intellectual, political, and creative labor of Black and Indigenous peoples. The book foregrounds their resistances to settler capitalism and dependency. Common themes in Brazilian and Latin American studies emerge, and Poets's theoretical contributions are relevant to other countries. They also invigorate a dialogue between North America and South America. The powerful narrative will be invaluable to scholars and students of Brazil and Latin America and encourage an imagining of decolonial strategies in both hegemonic and peripheral settler colonial contexts around the globe"--
