Cancer and its treatments have far-reaching and long-lasting effects on quality of life, and no more so than in the area of sexuality and sexual functioning. The successful treatment of cancer often leaves survivors with an enhanced appreciation of life and the love they have in their lives. Difficulty expressing love through the most intimate of acts is devastating for many couples after treatment. For those who are not partnered, treatment side effects pose additional challenges in the realm of dating and establishing new relationships when body image is altered. In the 10 years since the first edition of this book was published, oncology care providers have shown an increasing interest in addressing their patients' changes to sexuality. The field has moved from an overwhelming silence to discussions that are much more open. Both survivors and their partners have benefited from this. But so too have oncology care providers who are increasingly providing comprehensive care for their patients, especially in this most sensitive aspect of quality of life. This second edition of the award-winning and practice-changing text includes updated evidence and models that address the assessment and management of cancer-related sexual problems for survivors of all ages with a broad variety of cancers. Assigned to a quiet corner of Ireland's most remote county, Martin Ridge was heading for retirement after a long career with An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force. All that changed when a call from a local priest set in motion what would become the most horrific sex abuse investigation the island had ever known. At Christmas 1997 a local priest Fr Eugene Greene reported to the Gardaí that a man had tried to blackmail him. This call, an act of hubris, set in motion a Garda investigation that revealed him to be a serial abuser of children. As word of the investigation spread, 26 men came forward. Most were from the tiny Irish-speaking parish of Gort an Choirce. All had been abused by Greene as children. Soon after, another man came forward to say that he had been sexually abused by a local schoolteacher, Denis McGinley. As Ridge dug deeper, he discovered that McGinley had been systematically abusing children in his classroom for decades. He had at least 50 victims. The Greene and McGinley cases both involved the Catholic Church. Greene was a priest, and McGinley a teacher in a Catholic school answerable to religious managers. As Ridge investigated, he discovered that the Church knew about the abuse, but ignored the problem. Brilliantly written and unsparing in its fidelity to the truth, Breaking the Silence is more than an account of a police investigation: it's the story of an entire community's struggle to come to terms with its betrayal by those in whom it placed the most trust.

According to the National Cancer Institute, there are an estimated 13.7 million living Americans who are cancer survivors. The institute expects that number to rise to almost 18 million over the next decade. The Institute of Medicine notes that patients diagnosed with cancer have an estimated 64% chance of surviving five years, up from 50% three decades ago. And most of them have lingering symptoms, both physical and emotional. The Cancer Survivor is a companion and guide for those millions of individuals who are finally done with treatments but are still on the journey to wholeness. Beth Leibson completed her chemotherapy and radiation in 2007. She had beat cancer, but was left with lingering memory issues, exhaustion, depression, pain, and the fear that at any point, the cancer could return. Here she tells the story of how she rebuilt her life, and shares advice from other experts, addressing the emotional, medical, and professional challenges of life after cancer. Here are the questions you’re afraid to ask (“When will my sex drive come back?”), the questions you hadn’t yet considered (“How do I reenter the work force after a ‘break’ of a year or more?”), and those you know you should be thinking about but haven’t had the energy for (“What supplements or alternative therapies should I be taking to regain my strength?”). Warm, honest, and full of sage advice, this is the book Leibson wishes she had had when the nightmare of cancer treatments drew to a close and the overwhelming reality of starting life over again began.

Cancer Intimacy And Sexuality written by Yacov Reisman and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-16 with Medical categories.

This book provides a wide-ranging overview of the sexual consequences of cancer and its treatment with the aim of equipping physicians and other health care providers with the awareness and knowledge required in order to offer patients effective treatment. While sexuality may not be the primary focus for cancer patients, at some point, whether because of sexual changes or relationship issues, many patients come to acknowledge the effects that cancer and its treatment have had on their sexuality. Although the impacts are frequently similar, significant variation is observed. Some patients experience changes in all phases of sexual response, while others experience none; moreover, the consequences of the effects may be felt differently by patients and partners. Unfortunately, many physicians and health care providers remain insufficiently aware of the impact of cancer on sexuality and/or lack knowledge about the concerns of patients and the available treatments and coping strategies. A further issue is the reticence of physicians to discuss sexuality and the fear of sexologists to talk to patients about cancer. Readers will find this book to be a rich source of help in overcoming these constraints and delivering suitable care to patients.
