They had continued their course, at a good pace, for some considerable time, and the lengthy shadows of evening were fast changing into the gloom of night; when the Mahratta, pointing with his lance to what appeared a faint spark in the distance, ' exclaimed, "Do you see that light, yonder, to the left of the belt of jungle 1" "I discern no light," said the Persian; for though younger in years, he had not the keen eye for distance, of the old trooper. "Those are our bivouac fires, nevertheless," said Bajee, "our journey will soon be at an end." The road now wound round a thick tope of mango trees, for about a quarter of a mile, when a sudden turn brought them within a stone's-throw of the Mahratta out-posts. The watch-fires burning brightly, displayed a motley assemblage of tents, elephants, and sentries, only half discerned in the distance. Bajee Ram checked his horse; and, directing the Persian to do the same, and remain where he was, advanced alone at a foot pace, until he was about twenty yards from the vidette, who, levelling his jesrail and blowing his match, challenged him with the usual demand, "Quhon artai" (who comes?) to which query, Bajee quickly replied, "tume ke bhye" (a brother). "Maharashtra?" cried the vidette. "Jee ho," (yes) answered Bajee Earn. "Bhote eucha, --artai," (very well, --advance, ) said the sentry.
