L'origine des communes est fort ancienne. La commune designait une espece de societe que les habitants ou bourgeois d'un meme lieu contractaient entre eux, et au moyen de laquelle ils formaient tous ensemble un corps; avaient le droit de s'assembler et deliberer de leurs affaires communes, de se choisir des officiers pour les gouverner, de percevoir les revenus communs, d'avoir un sceau et un coffre commun. Louis-le-Gros passe neanmoins communement pour le premier qui les ait etablies. La plupart de ses sujets, meme de ceux qui habitaient les villes, etaient encore serfs; ils ne formaient point de corps entre eux, et ne pouvaient par consequent s'assembler: c'est pourquoi ils se racheterent, moyennant une somme considerable qu'ils payaient au roi ou autre seigneur pour toute redevance. Ceux qui composaient la commune se nommaient proprement bourgeois, et elisaient de leur corps des officiers pour les gouverner, sous les noms de maire, jures, echevins, etc. c'est l'origine des corps de ville. Ces officiers rendaient la justice entre les bourgeois...

However sick children have not always had adequate medical care or protection. The essays in Children’s Issues in Historical Perspective investigate the identification, prevention, and treatment of childhood diseases from the 1800s onwards, in areas ranging from French-colonial Vietnam to nineteenth-century northern British Columbia, from New Zealand fresh air camps to American health fairs. “Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism.
