Luis Alberto Romero sostiene que durante los años de los gobiernos kirchneristas, a pesar del espectacular crecimiento de las exportaciones agrícolas y la solución de los problemas fiscales, no cambiaron las condiciones del país, profundamente transformado desde 1976. Se acentuaron el deterioro del Estado y la desigualdad social, y se consolidó el mundo de la pobreza. La democracia establecida en 1983 fue derivando hacia un sistema en el que los recursos del Estado fueron usados sin control por sus gobernantes, para acumular poder y reproducirlo. La Argentina presenta una realidad incierta y un futuro difícil. Si bien el autor no da cabida a un optimismo acrítico, su esfuerzo reflexivo se apoya en la confianza en "la capacidad de los hombres para realizar su historia, hacerse cargo de sus circunstancias y construir una sociedad mejor".
