"On 6 October 2016 the Advisory Council on International Affairs (AIV) received a request for an advisory report on what the shape of the Netherlands' future relationship with the United Kingdom (UK) should be following the referendum in the UK on 23 June 2016, in which a majority of 51.9% of the British electorate who voted chose the option of leaving the EU. In its request for advice, the government stated that it was disappointed with the result but that it respected the outcome. The government views the UK as a valued member of the EU and an important European partner for the Netherlands, and has hence consistently sought to keep the United Kingdom within the EU fold. The request showed that the government believes it prudent at this point to consider what the shape of the Netherlands’ future relationship with the UK should be and in this light it asked the AIV the following questions: 1. From the Netherlands’ perspective, what should be the key elements of the new bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom? 2. From a Community perspective, what key elements should be part of the EU's new relationship with the United Kingdom? 3. What implications do the elements referred to in the previous two questions have for Dutch interests and the formation of coalitions within Europe? 4. What should the Dutch government's aims be in its bilateral relationship with the UK in the next several years?"--Foreword.

This book is essential reading for both 'leavers' and 'remainers'. The author is a former senior police officer, and a 'senior police advisor' to government, who has undertaken a 'search for the truth', amidst all the political and media obfuscation. The events of the past few years have revealed a deep chasm between the democratic 'will of the people' and those they elect to represent them in the 'corridors of power' and the author has exposed the 'breath-taking' hypocrisy of many former leaders, who have contributed to our 'democracy in crisis'. The author has lost faith in former Prime Minister, John Major, who won the 1992 General Election with a minority of electoral votes, which is effectively the 'tyranny of the minority', and then refused to let the people vote on the 'crucial' Maastricht Treaty (1992), and now refers to the Brexit vote as the 'tyranny of the majority'. He has also lost faith in our once 'great' leader, Tony Blair, who said that 'things could only get better' and then took us into the disastrous Iraq War, which destabilised the Middle East, against the 'will of the people', and he now wants to stop Brexit and again ignore the 'will of the people'! He has also lost faith in the leaders of the Liberal Democrats, who want to Stop Brexit, and Nick Clegg, who wrote a book: Stop Brexit. So far as Jeremy Corbyn is concerned, the dubious leader of the Labour Party, the 'ultimate protestor', who was genetically opposed to the European Union, he has now undergone a 'Damascene Conversion', and wants another referendum, with an option to remain. This is political hypocrisy on a grand scale and those responsible for our 'democracy in crisis' must be held to account by the people they serve. The author, who wrote Smaller Government, Bigger People, Stronger Society (2015), is a strong proponent of a 'People's Democracy', rather than the sovereignty of a 'Parliamentary Democracy', which has shown that it cannot be trusted to represent the democratic 'will of the people'.

Drawing on a range of disciplinary, conceptual and theoretical approaches, this book analyses the complex interconnections between social policy formation and implementation in the European Union before and during the UK’s membership. It explores the issues, debates and policy challenges facing the EU at different stages in its development, and shows how the UK promoted and hampered social integration. With the UK’s decision to leave the EU as one of the greatest challenges in the EU’s history, this book seeks to understand the role played by social policy in the referendum campaign and withdrawal negotiations, and considers what Brexit means for social policy development both in the UK and across the EU.

The Brexit vote in June 2016 was a significant event that shook the ruling elites across the West. It was a rebellion by ordinary voters against the establishment and the dogma being forced upon them. Superficially, the British ruling class, the Ponzi Class, were divided between those who reluctantly accepted the result and those who rejected it. 'Brexit means Brexit' announced Theresa May, who became the new British prime minister; the statement was meaningless waffle. In the year following the referendum vote, notwithstanding some shenanigans in the courts and excitable gossip in the media, there has not been Brexit. Nor is there any prospect of Britain leaving the EU in the near future. By the summer of 2017, after a bungled general election, all that the May Government had to offer was talk of Brexit occurring in March 2019, with all sorts of transition arrangements to follow, with little change to full EU membership. Britain was to seek a 'deep and special partnership with the EU', rather than simply leaving. Britain would remain in the Single Market and under European Court of Justice rule - at least during a transitional period that might last many years. The purpose of this book is to examine how the British Ponzi class thwarted Brexit, and how the democratic will of the electorate was ignored. The spirit of optimism and patriotism was bludgeoned down by political correctness and globalization. An objective of tariff-free access to the Single Market was the justification for inaction - an alter upon which anything and everything else was to be sacrificed. The May Government steered Britain towards more globalization to replace EU rule. The creed of political correctness advanced undisturbed. Democracy was abandoned. The British Ponzi class survived the EU referendum vote, and successfully neutralized it. This book gives an account of how that happened.

In the referendum of 23 June 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union. However, in constitutional terms, nothing has changed. The Leave side won but Brexit has not been triggered. The UK remains a member of the EU. No formal negotiations have been held; no exit terms have been decided. Despite demands by leading EU figures, the EU cannot force the UK to send the formal Article 50 notification that would begin the process of leaving. It is even conceivable that no notification will ever be sent. The UK's prime minister has declared that 'Brexit means Brexit' -- but the UK government is struggling to grapple with the problems of Brexit, and there is no obvious way out. How did this situation come about? What options does the UK now have? What does a Brexit mean for the UK and the EU, and for the UK's crucial relationships with overseas partners such as the US? This book offers an accessible and unbiased guide to Brexit: the issues and events that led to the vote, the political turmoil that has resulted from it, and the crisis the UK now faces. It examines key debates over 'sovereignty', immigration, and UK contributions to the EU, which led to the Leave vote. It explains the controversy surrounding Article 50 of the EU treaty: what is the process necessary for leaving the EU, and how might the UK approach the monumental task of disentangling its legal system from the EU? It scrutinises the exit strategies being weighed up the UK government, and the fraught negotiations over free movement of people and access to the single market. What might the exit agreement look like? What are the implications of 'hard' Brexit or 'soft' Brexit-or no Brexit at all? The book is a key reference for anyone seeking to understand the important and complex issues of Brexit, and its wide-ranging consequences.

Brexit means Brexit and other meaningless mantras have simply confirmed that confusion and uncertainty have dominated the early stages of this era defining event. Though there has been a lack of coherent and substantive policy goals from the UK government, this does not prevent analysis of the various causes of Brexit and the likely constraints on and consequences of the various forms Brexit might take. Is Brexit a last gasp of neoliberalism in decline? Is it a signal of the demise of the EU? Is it possible that the UK electorate will get what they thought they voted for (and what was that)? Will a populist agenda run foul of economic and political reality? What chance for the UK of a brave new world of bespoke trade treaties straddling a post-geography world? Is the UK set to become a Singapore-lite tax haven? What is the difference between a UK-centric and a UK-centred point of view on Brexit? Will Brexit augment disintegrative tendencies in the European and world economy? These are some of the questions explored in this timely set of essays penned by some of the best known names in political economy and international political economy. The chapters in this book originally published as a special issue in Globalizations.
