The author, Barbara Maltby was "Mom" and wrote Letom from a collection of hastily scribbled notes on scraps of paper that were thrown into a box marked, hopefully, Book, over the years she was in the motel business. Sources were also copies of letters written to friends and relatives, the yearly newsletter sent to guests and friends, and her daily log. The stories are mostly humorous or bizarre. They draw a naked picture of human behavior in a setting that seems to bring out the real person often void of the trappings of polite society. It gives glimpses of the traveling public behind closed motel doors and tells stories of the lives of people seldom seen through other exposures. As maid, desk clerk, handyman, maintenance crew, laundress, bartender and cook, this Mom and Pop saw interesting interludes in the lives of travelers. What she tells is true and is a personal expression of what happened to them and what it did to them. A friend told the author that more happens at the motel in one day than most people experience in a lifetime.

Bricks and Roses approaches the differences between men and women in their nature from a unique viewpoint. Men are and should be similar to bricks in their strength, solidarity and ability to protect themselves and their family. Women are the multifaceted beauty of humanity. Because they are the wellspring of life they require protection, understanding, appreciation and love. These factors create for her the environment she needs to enable her to produce offspring. Understanding and adopting positive characteristics and behaviors makes life enjoyable and fulfilling. Bricks and Roses is an analogy about male and female nature and characteristics. Dysfunction in both men and woman with respect to relationships between them is evident in most marriages. Children are the innocent victims of the parents negative traits. You can have a better, happier and more enjoyable life when you understand how and why you should be like a brick and a rose.

Eight-year-old Nika candidly tells the story of her life growing up in a Caribbean ghetto in the eighties. Nika is unintentionally funny, unbelievably clever, and kicks butt when she needs to. Nika's dilemma is simple. She wants to exist without torture but life in the ghetto makes this an unrealistic desire. Being the twelfth child of fifteen, Nika finds a way to get the attention she needs. Her cute, little black face sheds light on the woes of a Caribbean ghetto. Despite abject poverty, violence, and physical abuse, Nika maintains a hopeful demeanor that is far too mature for her age. She stands up to bullies, outsmarts sexual predators, and puts an end to her desire to cheat and steal. After her most horrific experience, Nika finds a diary of a visitor to her Caribbean island that tells the story of Meredith. Meredith is a successful criminal defense lawyer with many burdens, struggles, and secrets. Will Meredith's heart-rending story help Nika uncover the "happily-ever-after" in the ghetto? Or will the ghetto destroy Nika's resilient spirit?
