A fearless investigation of mainstream medicine's most revered dogma, Bridge Across the Abyss is solidly based on trusted medical literature. Find out why advice from authorities on screening tests, blood transfusions, pain and anti-reflux medicines, vitamin supplementation, cholesterol and diet is often wrong. See how clinical trials are slanted. This is a single compendium consisting of a discussion that describes commonly employed clinical practices that are instituted and taught despite the surprising lack of data supporting their use. In essence, these have created a medical dogma that is seldom questioned and accepted as valid regardless of what the evidence has borne out.

How serious are the threats to our environment? Here is one measure of the problem: if we continue to do exactly what we are doing, with no growth in the human population or the world economy, the world in the latter part of this century will be unfit to live in. Of course human activities are not holding at current levels—they are accelerating, dramatically—and so, too, is the pace of climate disruption, biotic impoverishment, and toxification. In this book Gus Speth, author of Red Sky at Morning and a widely respected environmentalist, begins with the observation that the environmental community has grown in strength and sophistication, but the environment has continued to decline, to the point that we are now at the edge of catastrophe. Speth contends that this situation is a severe indictment of the economic and political system we call modern capitalism. Our vital task is now to change the operating instructions for today's destructive world economy before it is too late. The book is about how to do that.

Living on the Cusp is an autobiography regarding a colorful life, filled with failures and missed opportunities, but with final success. I, through my life, enjoyed a multitude of various experiences starting by being raised on a large ranch and farming operation with influences from my dramatic parents and older achieving siblings providing a competitive effect while keeping me on a path towards achievements. My perceptions of life have been shaped by being born into the Great Depression, experiencing the events of World War II, being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, playing my saxophone professionally, being involved in the colorful entertainment industry, working as a professional photographer, and my many business ventures for good or for bad. After my many varied and colorful female relationships I found my loving mate Dorothy, which added to building my success through our thirty-eight years of challenges. My life truly has been that of living on the narrow edge, the cusp, of life while facing the challenges, trauma, and positive events leading to success at the top of my own small, but secure, peak.

"TO CHANGE THE THINGS WE CAN" In surviving substance abuse addiction, it is not so much about the things that can be changed as recognizing the things that are out of our control. What makes addiction a deadly disease is that our distorted thinking wants to pick and choose the battle lines. This closed form of thinking, which is about how much we fight instead of accept, is the reason that millions go to their grave each year as a consequence. Many of those who die are collateral damage to the devastation of our addictions. Medical science has yet to create an antidote for pride, which keeps the addict in the bondage of self. This bondage insures that there appears to be no way out because of our powerlessness to change. It is our pride, which is false and misplaced because of distorted thinking, that tells us that we cannot be worthy unless we can run our own lives. The value that society places on pride only reinforces our distorted thinking. Power to change comes from stepping aside and letting the powers already in place work without interference. This is not an easy task for individuals who have invested all their resources on the proposition that the most important thing is to be able to control the way we feel.

THE ONLY ACCOUNT IN ENGLISH ABOUT LRRPs IN THE USSR Colonel I. G. Starinov, who began as a mere private in the Red Army and went on to become Russia's top demolitions expert, is a rare eyewitness to the entire history of the Soviet regime and one of the few to survive disagreeing with Stalin's military decisions. From partisan operations in the Russian Civil War through training and fighting with Spanish guerrillas against Franco, to using the first radio-detonated mine to kill a German general, Starinov narrates events never before revealed in the West. Caught by accident right at the border when the Germans attacked in WWII, Starinov went on to play a crucial role in the creation and training of a virtual partisan army. By wreaking havoc with the German railroad supply lines, these guerrillas were crucial to Soviet success at the front. Now in his nineties, Starinov survived warfare and even more terrifying political purges to provide this personal, firsthand look of the some of the greatest dramas in history.

Applied Grammatology written by Gregory L. Ulmer and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Originally published in 1984. In Applied Grammatology, Gregory Ulmer provides an extraordinary introduction to the third, "applied" phase of grammatology, the "science of writing," outlined by Jacques Derrida in Of Grammatology. Ulmer looks to the later experimental works of Derrida (beginning with Glas and continuing through Truth in Painting and The Post Card). In these, he discovers a critical methodology radically different from the deconstruction for which Derrida is known. At the same time, he finds the source of a new pedagogy for all the humanities, one based on grammatology and appropriate to the era of audiovisual communications in which we live. Detractors of Derrida often accuse him of superficial wordplay and of using images and puns as nonfunctional subversions of academic conventions. Ulmer argues that there is, in fact, a fully developed use of homonyms in Derrida's style, which produces its own distinctive knowledge and insight. Derrida's experiments with images, moreover—his expansion of descriptions of everyday objects such as umbrellas, matchboxes, and post cards into cognitive models—serve to reveal a simplicity underlying intellectual discourse, which could be used to eliminate the gap separating the general public from specialists in cultural studies. Comparing the stylistic innovations of Derrida with Jacques Lacan's use of puns and diagrams, with the German performance artist Joseph Beuys's demonstration of models, and with the "montage writing" of the films of Sergei Eisenstein, Ulmer explores the possibility of deriving a postmodernist pedagogy from Derrida's texts. The first study to suggest the full potential of the program available in Derrida's writings, Applied Grammatology is also the first outline of a Derridean alternative to deconstructionism. With its shift away from Derrida's philosophical studies to his experimental texts, Ulmer's book aims to inaugurate a new movement in the American adaptation of contemporary French theory.
