August 1907 erfolgten Hinscheiden, also einen Zeitraum von 38 Jahren. Je mehr sich die Briefe der Gegenwart nähern, desto schwieriger gestaltete sich die Aufgabe, aus dem vorhandenen Material die geeignete Auswahl zu treffen und bei den Kürzungen der Pietät und dem Takt in glei cher Weise gerecht zu werden. Einmal, weil die vielfachen Ämter und Pflichten, die Joachim im Lauf der Jahre ubertragen wurden, ihn nur noch selten zu mehr als kurzen und geschäftlichen Äußerungen kommen ließen, dann, und das gilt besonders von den Briefen an ihn weil darin Verhältnisse und Personen beruhrt werden, die noch der Gegenwart angehören. Wie in den voraufgegangenen Bänden sind Auslassungen durch angedeutet, gelegentlich jedoch, wenn die Andeutung der Kürzung etwas Verletzendes haben oder auch nur vermuten lassen konnte (vgl. Marie von Bulow in der Einleitung zum 3. Bande der Briefe ihres Mannes, S. VIII), still schweigend vorgenommen worden.
