Excerpt from British Education After the War The appeal of this little book is to the national and Imperial citizenhood. It is a prayer for moral unity as the only sure basis of political and economic unity. It is prepared in a spirit of faith and confidence in the power of the British people to meet and fulfill all the tasks of reconstruction. Though details are often discussed in passing, my central endeavour has been to illustrate the simple proposition that the right aim of British education is Service of Family, Country, and Empire, based on Industry, inspired by History, and perpetually mindful of the claims of the larger circle of Humanity. I am gravely conscious that the demand for the application of the educational scheme to all young people up to the age of eighteen, with a guarantee of employment in the municipal, national, or Imperial service, will be regarded as extreme. But we live in an age of great issues and great responsibilities, and our ambitions and resolves must be equally great. Excerpt from British Universities and the War: A Record and Its Meaning I have been asked to write a word of intro duction to this volume, which is designed to provide for American readers an outline of the work done by British Universities during the War. When I consented to undertake this Preface I thought that it would be easy to express my own feelings as well as the essential facts of an experience so salient and penetrating that no one who has lived through it can regard himself hereafter as an object of any special interest or importance. But as I reflected I experienced a Singular difficulty in saying anything at all. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Oxford After the War A Liberal Education There are two propositions which I wish to make prominent at the outset, for they have ruled the thought which I have given to the subject of this pamphlet: - I. A long history of constitutional development lay behind Oxford when the War came and made the great difference: reformers, with proposals designed to meet the great difference, must, first of all, realise clearly what was the essential characteristic of the life of Oxford throughout the stages of her development in the past, and, realising that characteristic, must see that their reforms are still, in widely altered circumstances, true expressions of it: they must not allow the great difference to break the natural continuity of the traditional life of Oxford; rather, they must use the great difference as an opportunity of maintaining that life in fresh vigour and with enhanced value. Excerpt from Our Schools in War Time and After It is not an army that we must shape and train for war; it is a nation... The whole nation must be a team in which each man shall play the part for which he is best fitted... Each man shall be classified for service in the place to which it shall best serve the general good to call him... The significance of this cannot be overstated. It is a new thing in our history and a landmark in our progress. It is a new manner of accepting and vitalizing our duty to give ourselves with thoughtful devotion to the common purpose of us all. Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
