Hymnody is widely recognised as a central tenet of Methodism’s theological, doctrinal, spiritual, and liturgical identity. Theologically and doctrinally, the content of the hymns has traditionally been a primary vehicle for expressing Methodism’s emphasis on salvation for all, social holiness, and personal commitment, while particular hymns and the communal act of participating in hymn singing have been key elements in the spiritual lives of Methodists. An important contribution to the history of Methodism, British Methodist Hymnody argues that the significance of hymnody in British Methodism is best understood as a combination of its official status, spiritual expression, popular appeal, and practical application. Seeking to consider what, when, how, and why Methodists sing, British Methodist Hymnody examines the history, perception, and practice of hymnody from Methodism’s small-scale eighteenth-century origins to its place as a worldwide denomination today.

John Wesley published three tune books in two-decade intervals for the evangelical British Methodist movement within the Church of England with its varied audiences and diverse musical tastes. S T Kimbrough, Jr. and Carlton R. Young have published the only facsimile reprints, with critical introductions and notes, of the first two collections (1742 and 1761). Wesley intended his third collection, Sacred Harmony, or a choice Collection of Psalms and Hymns, Set to Music in two or three parts for the Voice, Harpsichord & Organ (1780), henceforth SH 1780, as a musical companion to his monumental A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists (1780). This edition of SH 1780 provides the ecclesial, cultural, and musical contexts of the volume; traces the sources of each tune and text (with textual variants), provides indexes of texts and tunes, and appropriate appendices. The copy used for this facsimile includes the autograph of John Wesley and the date of January 10, 1780, on an opening flyleaf, his marginal notes, and is housed in the archives of Old St. George’s United Methodist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each page of this facsimile edition of SH 1780 has been thoroughly cleaned of bleedthrough and blotches.

This interdisciplinary study investigates how hymns and hymn-singing help catalyze and sustain spiritual transformation in eighteenth-century British Wesleyan Methodism. Early Methodists were a “singing people” while also a community within which many members experienced conversion and sanctification. This correlation is by no means accidental. Eighteenth-century narratives in the forms of journals, letters and diaries give evidence of early Methodist appreciation of communal hymn-singing as a central means by which God’s grace is felt leading to experiences of conversion and sanctification. Taking these testimonies and Wesleyan theological commitments into account, this study identifies emotions as a key element that facilitates spiritual transformation. A robust view of emotion drawing from the bio-psycho-social levels is proposed to address the multidimensional dynamics of communal hymn-singing and to illuminate Wesleyan understanding of spiritual transformation as a change of affections. Neurologist Antonio Damasio’s neuroscientific theory of emotion and consciousness linking emotion to the body and mind lays the groundwork for a multilevel view. Psychologist Klaus Scherer contributes to the discussion with a theory of music-evoked emotions based on the dynamic process of appraisals. Social scientist Emile Durkheim’s fertile insight into collective emotions, operationalized by sociologist Randall Collins, is deployed to investigate the dynamics of the social practice of singing. Insights from these three perspectives undergird the analysis of lyrics, music, and social performance to reveal the layered effects of communal hymn-singing to catalyze and sustain spiritual transformation. Current emotion research along with neuroscientific and psychological studies of empathy, memory and entrainment are used to show how hymns and hymn-singing evoke biological, psychological and social processes that contribute to experiences of spiritual change. This investigation demonstrates the efficacy of communal hymn-singing as a means of spiritual formation, having effects on both the individuals and the community. As an interdisciplinary project using theological and scientific resources, this study demonstrates the value of such dialogue among disciplines, and lays an empirical foundation for further research.
