Seminar paper from the year 1999 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, University of Osnabr ck (Fachbereich Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaften), course: Constructing Britishness: Fiction, Film, Press, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: "We call our islands by no less than six different names, England, Britain, Great Britain, the British Isles, the United Kingdom and, in very exalted moments, Albion." This quotation taken from George Orwell's essay England, Your England (1941) clearly shows that the names quoted above are often used as synonyms, although they patently are not. So it is no surprise that some people define themselves as being "Englishsorrybritish" - a term which occurred in the newspapers several times over the last few months. A lot of people seem to be quite confused about their identity, about who they are and where they belong. But using the words "English" and "British" interchangeably is, in my opinion, not very fair - especially with regard to the inhabitants of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In fact, the so-called United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland comprises four different indigenous nations: English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish. And considering the fact that the British Isles (cf. map 1, page 2) - of which the United Kingdom3 is a part - have attracted settlers and immigrants for several centuries, it is not surprising that the contemporary British are a very diverse people, or - as is stated in the title of my paper - people from worldwide origins. The question arises whether the majority of people in the United Kingdom consider themselves to be British or rather to be English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or part of any other community often referred to as a so-called ethnic minority group.

Beware The British Serpent written by Robert L. Calder and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-03-01 with History categories.

Using newly uncovered archival material, Calder offers provocative new insights into the war work of more than forty prominent British authors, focusing particularly on Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward, H.G. Wells, Vera Brittain, and J.B. Priestley. He provides a comprehensive analysis of the suspicions beneath the wartime Anglo-American alliance and describes the tensions that arose between the British Ministry of Information and the Foreign Office over the nature and direction of the propaganda campaign in the United States.Calder demonstrates that Britain's well-organized propaganda campaign in the United States to persuade it to enter World War I had left isolationist and Anglophobic Americans highly suspicious of anything that hinted of propaganda. Any effort to influence public opinion had therefore to be carefully and subtly undertaken, and the British Government soon realised that well-known authors - employed officially or semi-officially - were ideal for the task. Respected for their pens, they were especially suited to reminding Americans of their strongest links with Britain - a common language and a shared cultural heritage of Shakespeare, Dickens, Austen, Hardy, Thackeray, and others. As well, their profession had often led them to tour, speak, write, and live in America, and, because they could live on their royalties and speaking fees, they were not on the payroll of the British government and thus could not be identified as paid foreign agents.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Kultur und Landeskunde, Note: 3+, Universität Rostock (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), Veranstaltung: Hauptseminar, 8 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Never before it seemed so necessary for European countries to demonstrate strong company than after World War II. Some countries immediately started to meet and talk about what could be done to prevent Europe for wars like the one that just ended. The idea of forming a federation with one government as head was not new. Even in earlier stages in history countries tried to unify Europe. At that time the means of reaching the aim were invasion and elimination. The war led by Hitler was the last attempt to reach uniformity by force. The smaller European countries started to talk about integration and about forming a customers union as a first step. Great Britain, still a leading power in world trade and politics, did not feel as a part of Europe. Politics after World War II to 1958 were mainly dominated by the relationship between Great Britain and continental Europe. Mainly the Six wanted an integration of Western Europe. Britain did not feel comfortable with the idea of being part of a union and did not want to join the other states. They did not cooperate; contrariwise, they worked against the efforts of the other states. Great Britain jammed the attempts to form close mergers, so the formation of the European Economic Community and the concept of a common market was hard to get through by the other European countries. The aim of this paper is to give an overview about the processes of forming economic and political institutions and the attitude of Great Britain to the Continent between 1945 and 1958. The attempt is made to give reasons for Britain's attitude and its decision against a common market. The most important events during this period will be researched and evaluated. However, this is just an approach; it is not po
