This book offers something new, a full-length study of printing Anglo-Saxon (Old English) from 1566 to 1705, combining analysis of content and form of production. It starts from the end-product and addresses the practical issues of providing for printing Anglo-Saxon authentically, and why this was done. The book tells a story that is largely Cambridge-orientated until Oxford made an impact, largely thanks to Franciscus Junius from Leiden. There is a catalogue of all books containing Anglo-Saxon, with full details of their use of manuscript or printed sources. This information allows us to see how knowledge of Anglo-Saxon grew and developed.

This book aims to provide the critical tools to help scholars in their use of Samaritan manuscripts. The basic codicological tools is a series of complementary data-bases compiled from typological studies of the physical properties of manuscripts. Each typology is in effect a diachronic profile created by painstaking comparison and analysis of the physical properties of manuscripts of known provenance and/or date. Using these typologies or diachronic profiles it is possible to evaluate the chronology of the physical characteristics of any manuscript - the quire or gathering structure, ink, ruling, spacing of the text on the folio, sewing of the sections ... Naturally, the more information available about the physical properties of any manuscript the better the chance of making correlations between the typologies of different properties. The basic rule in palaeography and codicology is that the researcher works on an inductive basis from as wide a sample as possible of dated manuscripts. It is hoped that in the studies in this volume, evidence has been provided which will serve as a guide both to the appearance and the nature of Samaritan manuscripts and to the evaluative process that one would employ in examining them for codicological purposes. The reader should be able to apply the criteria provided here to the evaluation of whatever data can be retrieved from any undated Samaritan manuscripts with which he is confronted. Alan D. During even a cursory reading of the "literature about books," students of bibliography frequently have initial difficulties in understanding some of the terms they encounter. In A Bibliographical Companion, Roy Stokes provides an alphabetical list of such words and phrases. In this volume, the terms are defined briefly, their importance is discussed, and the author provides suggested readings designed to lead the student towards a more complete understanding. Aimed at students who are at an early stage of their bibliographical interests, A Bibliographical Companion is an invaluable resource.

The catalogue is intended to include all Greek types that were either available or used in Britain in the nineteenth century. It naturally therefore includes many first produced before that, because they continued in use during the nineteenth century and even beyond....I have strayed slightly into the twentieth century....
