One of the most critical parameters in antenna systems is the bandwidth. A narro w bandwidth is a major disadvantage of microstrip antennas in practical applicat ions. For present-day wireless communication systems, the required operating ban dwidths for antennas are about 7.6% for a Global System for Mobile Communication s (GSM), 9.5% for a Digital Cellular System (DCS), 7.5% for a Personal Communica tions Service (PCS), and 12.2% for a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). To meet these bandwidth requirements, many bandwidth-enhancement or broa dband techniques for microstrip antennas have been reported recently. This thesis presents EEPA, the Enhanced E-Patch Antenna, for the usage in a wide range of wireless communications frequency ranges. The antenna parameters are o ptimized to achieve a target wide bandwidth. The EEPA is designed, simulated, fa bricated, and tested, where it can be used in DCS, PCS, UMTS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 802.15, and WiMax 802.16 d. Moreover, the antenna design parameters ar e empirically formulated, and followed by a validation procedure. Also, this thesis presents a new microstrip patch antenna design model, the Mult i-Parallel Slots Microstrip Patch Antenna (MPSMPA). The antenna is designed and simulated for different scenarios (4 slots, 6 slots, and 8 slots). A 57% bandwid th is achieved in the 8-slots design. The antenna can be utilized in many wirele ss communications standards such as DCS, PCS, UMTS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, WiMax 802. 16 d, and MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service).

Our studies have shown the development of several ways of accurately yet efficiently modelling the behavior of closely spaced microstrip antenna elements. The accuracy has been verified by comparison with 'brute force' numerical procedures, and thus suggests that wideband microstrip antennas should be designable with much less difficulty than previously believed. Further, both experimental and numerical evidence has been obtained for the proposition that wider bandwidth, and even lower frequency operation of a microstrip patch antenna element can be achieved by arranging many closely coupled narrow strip dipoles together in an appropriate way. We are far from a complete understanding of these effects; especially there has been no study of the frequency dependence of the radiation properties of these new elements. Design and optimization of them is also in a very primitive stage, as accurate modeling of their properties requires numerically intensive methods at this time . Questions of this nature deserve more investigation. (RRH).
