Brown Rice is a memoir that reads like an adventure-humor-romance-thriller set in Philippines during the turbulent years of the Marcos dictatorship of the 60s and 70s. It's a coming-of-age story of Spike, who idolizes JFK, joins the fraternity of Marcos, and is in search of the woman a psychic claims would change his life. Spike's father is an adman who wrote a musical he wants to sell to Broadway. Spike's mother is an art teacher struggling to raise eight children on a tight budget as her husband battles poor health and prejudice for better employment. The backdrop of Manila in the 70s, student demonstrations, barricades, and tyranny puts the reader in the midst of the First Quarter Storm, the unrest and turmoil that preceded the declaration of Martial Law, the start of the Marcos dictatorship. The characters from high school, college and the fraternity who get involved in Spike's life are funny, genuine and unforgettable. The story starts in 1958 and builds in a cascading series of conflict, struggle and victory. The pages turn until the tumultuous and unexpected ending in 1980.

The Brown Rice Trilogy is set in Manila, where a family struggles with poverty in the 50s, achieves middle class prosperity in the 60s, and tries to stay alive during the turbulent years of the Marcos dictatorship in the 70s. In Book Three, the Yabut family struggles from the loss of business and income in the wake of the father's escape from authorities. The mother, Cota, must do what she can to secretly help her husband, Teddy. She must find a way to support her youngest children, confident that her older ones can fend for themselves. Oldest son, Spike, must decide what's best for his wife and baby daughter and struggle for a better tomorrow. As unexpected as the events were in Books One and Two, more surprises await in Brown Rice, Book Three: The Fugitive. An early review says: Brown Rice, Book Three: The Fugitive is a sprawling epic about a family torn apart by a dictator and scattered across the globe, told by the son left to try and pick up the pieces. You'll be rooting for our hero, Spike, in his battle to overcome self-doubt and persevere when the one man he relied on for inspiration, his father, is no longer at his side. With finesse and a deft wit, the author tells of the crazy characters that populate telemarketing call centers and the love, understanding, and determination that is the bedrock for a loving marriage. Brown Rice, Book Three is a loving portrait of two cities, Manila and Vancouver, each struggling in their own ways to move into a new world order and emerge as global cities. Most of all, it is a fable about trusting oneself, combining humility with determination, and practicing kindness. The result of which will be a path laid out for you by a higher power. This book is all of those things and more.

The Brown Rice Trilogy is set in Manila, where a family struggles with poverty in the 50s, achieves middle class prosperity in the 60s, and tries to stay alive during the turbulent years of the Marcos dictatorship in the 70s.In Book Two, Mad Men, Spike cleverly succeeds in advertising but fails repeatedly at finding true love. His father, in spite of his company's prosperity, risks everything to win back his family and his honor. In the 70s, the Philippines is in turmoil as demonstrations, strikes, and bombings disrupt the economy. Spike and his father belong to the same fraternity of the dictator Marcos and his political nemesis, Ninoy Aquino. Spike and his father are forced to take sides. An early review says: In this era when memoirs are hot and parent-bashing memoirs are hotter, it's particularly refreshing to read a well-written coming-of-age book where the author unabashedly adored his father and patterned his life after him. Like his father, Spike became a performer, a writer and an advertising executive, on track for more success, until the father chose to follow a different trajectory that perplexed the eldest son and threw the family's life in disarray. While deeply personal, the author's skilled writing also makes it a story of a generation of Filipinos who led privileged lives with access to a wide range of options for their future, and whose growing up happened under the specter of political upheaval. A riveting read, poignant and funny at times, this is the kind of book that keeps you up at night without regrets, and, at its end, makes you yearn for the next volume, which hopefully will come soon.

She didn't expect this coming-of-age novel to be a page turner. From an early review:In the Philippines, Teddy, an advertising man, struggles to support a growing family in the 1950s. Realizing that success comes from connections, he uses his fraternity and political network to raise his family out of poverty. Year Of No Sugar written by Eve Schaub and has been published by Sourcebooks, Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-08 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

For fans of the New York Times bestseller I Quit Sugar or Katie Couric's controversial food industry documentary Fed Up, A Year of No Sugar is a "delightfully readable account of how [one family] survived a yearlong sugar-free diet and lived to tell the tale...A funny, intelligent, and informative memoir." —Kirkus It's dinnertime. Do you know where your sugar is coming from? Most likely everywhere. Sure, it's in ice cream and cookies, but what scared Eve O. Schaub was the secret world of sugar—hidden in bacon, crackers, salad dressing, pasta sauce, chicken broth, and baby food. With her eyes opened by the work of obesity expert Dr. Robert Lustig and others, Eve challenged her husband and two school-age daughters to join her on a quest to quit sugar for an entire year. Along the way, Eve uncovered the real costs of our sugar-heavy American diet—including diabetes, obesity, and increased incidences of health problems such as heart disease and cancer. The stories, tips, and recipes she shares throw fresh light on questionable nutritional advice we've been following for years and show that it is possible to eat at restaurants and go grocery shopping—with less and even no added sugar. Year of No Sugar is what the conversation about "kicking the sugar addiction" looks like for a real American family—a roller coaster of unexpected discoveries and challenges. "As an outspoken advocate for healthy eating, I found Schaub's book to shine a much-needed spotlight on an aspect of American culture that is making us sick, fat, and unhappy, and it does so with wit and warmth."—Suvir Sara, author of Indian Home Cooking "Delicious and compelling, her book is just about the best sugar substitute I've ever encountered."—Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ron Powers

Extraordinary Ordinary People written by Condoleezza Rice and has been published by Crown this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-12 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This is the story of Condoleezza Rice that has never been told, not that of an ultra-accomplished world leader, but of a little girl--and a young woman--trying to find her place in a sometimes hostile world, of two exceptional parents, and an extended family and community that made all the difference. Condoleezza Rice has excelled as a diplomat, political scientist, and concert pianist. Her achievements run the gamut from helping to oversee the collapse of communism in Europe and the decline of the Soviet Union, to working to protect the country in the aftermath of 9-11, to becoming only the second woman--and the first black woman ever--to serve as Secretary of State. But until she was 25 she never learned to swim, because when she was a little girl in Birmingham, Alabama, Commissioner of Public Safety Bull Connor decided he'd rather shut down the city's pools than give black citizens access. Throughout the 1950's, Birmingham's black middle class largely succeeded in insulating their children from the most corrosive effects of racism, providing multiple support systems to ensure the next generation would live better than the last. But by 1963, Birmingham had become an environment where blacks were expected to keep their head down and do what they were told--or face violent consequences. That spring two bombs exploded in Rice’s neighborhood amid a series of chilling Klu Klux Klan attacks. Months later, four young girls lost their lives in a particularly vicious bombing. So how was Rice able to achieve what she ultimately did? Her father, John, a minister and educator, instilled a love of sports and politics. Her mother, a teacher, developed Condoleezza’s passion for piano and exposed her to the fine arts. From both, Rice learned the value of faith in the face of hardship and the importance of giving back to the community. Her parents’ fierce unwillingness to set limits propelled her to the venerable halls of Stanford University, where she quickly rose through the ranks to become the university’s second-in-command. An expert in Soviet and Eastern European Affairs, she played a leading role in U.S. policy as the Iron Curtain fell and the Soviet Union disintegrated. Less than a decade later, at the apex of the hotly contested 2000 presidential election, she received the exciting news--just shortly before her father’s death--that she would go on to the White House as the first female National Security Advisor. As comfortable describing lighthearted family moments as she is recalling the poignancy of her mother’s cancer battle and the heady challenge of going toe-to-toe with Soviet leaders, Rice holds nothing back in this remarkably candid telling.
