Tief im katholischen Glauben verwurzelt und von Neurosen geplagt, galt Anton Bruckner ein Leben lang als bauerlich ungeschliffener Sonderling. Ernst Decsey hat es sich in dem vorliegenden Buch zum Ziel gesetzt, Bruckners Musik als Ergebnis einer inneren Haltung zu beleuchten. Decsey zeichnet das Leben Bruckners von dessen Kindheit nach, uber die Jahre als Lehrer und Organist, seine Anfange als Komponist, die schwierigen Jahre in Wien und die spaten Erfolge mit seinen Kompositionen. Die lebhafte Schilderung des Charakters wird dabei stets in das Zeitgeschehen des 19. Jahrhunderts eingebettet. Eine ausfuhrliche Analyse einzelner Werke Bruckners - der Kirchenmusik zum einen, der Sinfonien zum anderen - bringt dem Leser die Brucknersche Klangsprache nahe. Notenbeispiele runden die Darstellung ab. Ernst Decsey, geboren 1870, war als Musikkritiker bei verschiedenen osterreichischen Zeitungen tatig. Er war ausserdem freier Schriftsteller und Lehrer fur Musikgeschichte und Asthetik. Bekanntheit erlangte er vor allem durch seine Musiker-Biographien.
