"Twenty-Eighty-Four" stands as a stark warning in the vein of George Orwell's visionary work, echoing the concerns of a world on the brink of losing its freedoms to technological and political forces. Set in a future where an illusion of security overshadows personal liberties, this narrative unfolds in a society where the line between ideological control and dystopian reality is thin. The year 2084 reveals a world transformed by decades of legal and regulatory changes that have reshaped societal norms and individual freedoms. Under the rule of an all-powerful regime, the essence of nature, history, and time is manipulated, leaving humanity in a state of controlled existence. In this world, Jack Jones, an editor at the Ministry of Truth, begins to question the narratives he's been complicit in crafting. Lena, a figure adept in technology and resistance, ignites his journey to awakening. Together, they embark on a dangerous path to undermine the regime's pervasive influence, using Jack's knowledge of the Ministry and Lena's technological skills. "Twenty-Eighty-Four" is more than a speculative glimpse into a dystopian future; it's a narrative deeply rooted in contemporary societal shifts, reflecting the ongoing struggle for freedom and authenticity. This tale of resilience and rebellion is a reminder and a call to action, urging readers to maintain vigilance against the erosion of independence. It's a tribute to human resilience in the face of authoritarianism, echoing Orwell's timeless message and urging readers to play their part in preventing such a future. In "Twenty-Eighty-Four," the fight for truth and freedom transcends the pages, mirroring the challenges of our own time.

A collection of stunning images from some of the world's leading photographers of animals in the human environment. HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene is an unflinching book of photography about our conflict with non-human animals around the globe. Through the lenses of thirty award-winning photojournalists, HIDDEN shines a light on the invisible animals in our lives: those with whom we have a close relationship and yet fail to see. The animals we eat and wear; the animals we use for research, work, and for entertainment; the animals we sacrifice in the name of tradition and religion. HIDDEN is a historical document, a memorial, and an indictment of what is and should never again be. Showcased by award-winning designer David Griffin, HIDDEN represents the work of thirty photojournalists who have documented--and continue to document--animal stories. Their exhaustive and in-depth work has resulted in some of the most compelling and historic images of animals ever seen. Among them are (in alphabetical order): Aaron Gekoski, Aitor Garmendia, Amy Jones, Andrew Skowron, Britta Jaschinski, Daniel Beltrá, Djurattsalliansen, Francesco Pistilli, Jan van Ijken, Joan de la Malla, Jo-Anne McArthur, Jose Valle, Kelly Guerin, Kristo Muurimaa, Konrad Lozinski, Louise Jorgensen, Luis Tato, Murdo MacLeod, Paul Hilton, Sabine Grootendorst, Selene Magnolia, Stefano Belacchi, Tamara Kenneally, and Timo Stammberger. "The photojournalists featured in Hidden have entered some of the darkest, most unsettling places in the world. The images they have captured are a searing reminder of our unpardonable behavior towards animals and will serve as beacons of change for years to come."--Joaquin Phoenix, actor "I am, quite simply, in awe of these photographers. In a way, they are like war photographers, except witness to a war that so many people choose to suppress that exists. This takes enormous inner strength and bloody-minded determination, because they cannot save any of the animals that they photograph; they can only hope that their photos will help illuminate the mass extermination that unfolds every second of every day across the planet. To me, they are heroes. Not just for one day, but over and over and over again."--Nick Brandt, photographer

Hailed in the Times Literary Supplement as 'probably the finest piece of non-fiction to come out of South Africa since the end of apartheid', The Dream Deferred is back in print and updated with a brilliant new epilogue. The prosperous Mbeki clan lost everything to apartheid. Yet the family saw its favourite son, Thabo, rise to become president of South Africa in 1999. A decade later, Mbeki was ousted by his own party and his legacy is bitterly contested – particularly over his handling of the AIDS epidemic and the crisis in Zimbabwe. Through the story of the Mbeki family, award-wining journalist Mark Gevisser tells the gripping tale of the last tumultuous century of South Africa life, following the family's path to make sense of the liberation struggle and the future that South Africa has inherited. At the centre of the story is Mbeki, a visionary yet tragic figure who led South Africa to freedom but was not able to overcome the difficulties of his own dislocated life. It is 15 years since Mbeki was unceremoniously dumped by the ANC, giving rise to the wasted years under Jacob Zuma. With the benefit of hindsight, and as Mbeki reaches the age of 80, Gevisser examines the legacy of the man who succeeded Mandela. '...essential reading for anyone intrigued by South Africa's complex philosopher-king.' - The Economist

"This book ... [shows] how the artist worked out his developing ideas primarily through drawing. Included are examples of work from his early years, such as the preparatory drawings he made as a muralist for the WPA in the 1930s, in addition to the increasingly abstract work of the 1940s and 1950s, and the sequence of pictorial experiments that led to his reintroduction of the figure in the late 1960s. Also reproduced, in color, are a number of painterly gouaches and a series of acrylics"--Back cover.

Beyond Vision is the first English-language collection of essays on art by Pavel Florensky (1882–1937), Russian philosopher, priest, linguist, scientist, mathematician – and art historian. In addition to seven essays by Florensky, the book includes a biographical introduction and an examination of Florensky’s contribution as an art historian by Nicoletta Misler. Beyond Vision reveals Florensky’s fundamental attitudes to the vital questions of construction, composition, chronology, function and destination in the fields of painting, sculpture and design. His reputation as a theologian and philosopher is already established in the English-speaking world, but this first collection in English of his art essays (translated by Wendy Salmond) will be a revelation to those in the field. Pavel Florensky was a true polymath: trained in mathematics and philosophy at Moscow University, he rejected a scholarship in advanced mathematics in order to study theology at the Moscow Theological Academy. He was also an expert linguist, scientist and art historian. A victim of the Soviet government’s animosity towards religion, he was condemned to a Siberian labor camp in 1933 where he continued his work under increasingly difficult circumstances. He was executed in 1937.

The New Woman Revised written by Ellen Wiley Todd and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-01-01 with Art categories.

In the years between the world wars, Manhattan's Fourteenth Street-Union Square district became a center for commercial, cultural, and political activities, and hence a sensitive barometer of the dramatic social changes of the period. It was here that four urban realist painters--Kenneth Hayes Miller, Reginald Marsh, Raphael Soyer, and Isabel Bishop--placed their images of modern "new women." Bargain stores, cheap movie theaters, pinball arcades, and radical political organizations were the backdrop for the women shoppers, office and store workers, and consumers of mass culture portrayed by these artists. Ellen Wiley Todd deftly interprets the painters' complex images as they were refracted through the gender ideology of the period. This is a work of skillful interdisciplinary scholarship, combining recent insights from feminist art history, gender studies, and social and cultural theory. Drawing on a range of visual and verbal representations as well as biographical and critical texts, Todd balances the historical context surrounding the painters with nuanced analyses of how each artist's image of womanhood contributed to the continual redefining of the "new woman's" relationships to men, family, work, feminism, and sexuality.
