Dies hat einerseits historische Gründe, andererseits beruht es auch auf eine wissenschaftsstrategische Pragmatik der Universitätsdisziplinen, die restriktiven politischen Planungsvorhaben unterliegen und eine Konzentration auf bestimmte Kernbereiche anstreben. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die empirische Methode der Inhaltsanalyse – eine der gängigsten Methoden, die in der Medien- bzw. Kommunikationswissenschaft Verwendung findet – vorzustellen und mögliche Anwendungsgebiete für die Buchwissenschaft zu erarbeiten. Zunächst wird einleitend die Definition des Mediums erläutert. Darüber hinaus erfolgt – trotz einer prekären Definition – die Vorstellung der Medienwissenschaft als universitäre Disziplin. In diesem Zusammenhang werden historische Aspekte des Universitätsfachs, die Aufgabenbereiche und auch mögliche Ausrichtungen des Fachs vorgestellt. Den Hauptteil der vorliegenden Arbeit bildet die Vorstellung der quantitativ-qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse . Zuvor wird das Methodenspektrum, das in der Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft Verwendung findet, kurz vorgestellt, um einen groben Überblick über die Arbeitsweisen und Definitionen darzustellen. Vor dem Hintergrund dieses methodischen Rahmens wird Theorie der Inhaltsanalyse im Hinblick auf die Definition, die Zielsetzungen und Charakteristika behandelt. Darüber hinaus wird die konkrete Durchführung anhand der unterschiedlichen Entwicklungsphasen und zahlreichen praktischen Beispiel praxisnah vorgestellt.
