This volume is the first in-depth study of a recently discovered Sanskrit dharani spell text from around the 5th century CE surviving in two palm-leaf and three paper manuscript compendia from Nepal. This rare Buddhist scripture focuses on the ritual practice of thaumaturgic weather control for successful agriculture through overpowering mythical Nagas. Traditionally, these serpentine beings are held responsible for the amount of rainfall. The six chapters of the Vajratundasamayakalparaja present the vidyadhara spell-master as a ritualist who uses mandalas, mudras and other techniques to gain mastery over the Nagas and thus control the rains. By subjugating the Nagas, favourable weather and good crops are guaranteed. This links this incantation tradition to economic power and the securing of worldly support for the Buddhist community.

Essential Compendium for Buddhists: A Modern Buddhist Liturgy is a book on Buddhist rituals, which was edited by An Jinho 安震湖 (1880–1965) and Choe Chwiheo 崔就墟 (1865–?). This work represents the process of evolution of modern Buddhist rituals and concrete features of popularization and modernization of Buddhism. An Jinho, a scholar-monk who worked around Yecheon and Mun-gyeong of North Gyeongsang Province, dedicated himself to the translation and publication of Buddhist canonical texts by establishing the publishing institute Mansanghoe. He is also well known as the editor of Seongmun uibeom (Buddhist Ritual Manual, 1935), the compilation of traditional Buddhist rituals. Choe Chwiheo is also a scholar-monk who worked in North Gyeongsang Province, and participated in the Mind-field Development Movement, a movement in the middle and late 1930s to educate people common people that simultaneously promoted agriculture in the countryside. Essential Compendium for Buddhists: A Modern Buddhist Liturgy is a collection that describes various Buddhist chanting or worship ceremonies. This book was reviewed by the Buddhist scholars Gwon Sangno and Gim Taeheup, and Han Yongun sponsored the publication. The main body is comprised of abbreviated excerpts from various Buddhist ceremonial texts along with additional explanations in the Korean language. This work encompasses the traditional process of Buddhist rituals and regular ceremonies along with verses, ritual prayers, precepts, and entreaties on the one hand, and reflects Buddhist efforts toward modernization in the process of its adaptation to the new age on the other. As an essential guide to Korean Buddhist rituals and ceremonies, this book was used as an indispensable manual for temple ceremonies and daily Buddhist events. The source text of this translation was the moveable lead type edition published at Yeonbangsa (1931), which was sold at Buddhist societies (Bulgyosa 佛敎社).

The ERC-funded research project BuddhistRoad aims to create a new framework to enable understanding of the complexities in the dynamics of cultural encounter and religious transfer in pre-modern Eastern Central Asia. Buddhism was one major factor in this exchange: for the first time the multi-layered relationships between the trans-regional Buddhist traditions (Chinese, Indian, Tibetan) and those based on local Buddhist cultures (Khotanese, Uyghur, Tangut) will be explored in a systematic way. The second volume Buddhism in Central Asia II—Practice and Rituals, Visual and Materials Transfer based on the mid-project conference held on September 16th–18th, 2019, at CERES, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany) focuses on two of the six thematic topics addressed by the project, namely on "practices and rituals", exploring material culture in religious context such as mandalas and talismans, as well as “visual and material transfer”, including shared iconographies and the spread of ‘Khotanese’ themes.

The present volume offers a dozen studies of manuscripts of the Tibetan Bon and Naxi Dongba traditions across time and space. While some of the contributions focus on particular features of manuscripts from either tradition, others explicitly bridge the two by considering common codicological and material aspects of selected examples or common themes in the content of the texts. This is the first primarily object-based study to deal with the cultural history and technology of books from the two traditions. It discusses collections of Bon and Naxi manuscripts, the concepts and history of both traditions, the science and technology of book studies as it relates to these collections, the relationship between text and image, writing materials, and the historical and archaeological context of the manuscripts' places of origin. The authors are specialists in different fields including philology, anthropology, art history, codicology and archaeometry. Leisure is a corollary to pleasure. Essays in this historical exploration trace how leisure and recreation were often imagined and celebrated during premodern times, from the ancient to the precolonial period. This book takes into account the differential access to leisure and pleasure based on class and gender where masculinity is projected through manly sports and femininity though beauty and indulgence in the projection of recreation, entertainment and luxury. The counter-discourse representing labour for those who cater for this leisure is invisibilized as is their transactional nature. The volume dwells on the attitudes, prescribed and proscribed, and brings to the fore the differences across religious ideologies such as Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jaina and Muslim in various periods. Further it looks at leisure in the various classes and cultural spaces such as the elite, women, the king in the bed chamber, the court with dancing girls, public areas such as orchards and gardens and performance spaces.
