Residential Architecture As Infrastructure written by Stephen H. Kendall and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-29 with Architecture categories.

This edited collection provides an up-to-date account, by a group of well-informed and globally positioned authors, of recently implemented projects, public policies and business activities in Open Building around the world. Countless residential Open Building projects have been built in a number of countries, some without knowledge of the original theory and methods. These projects differ in architectural style, building industry methods, economic system and social aims. National building standards and guidelines have been promulgated in several countries (Finland, China, Japan, Korea), providing incentives and guidance to Open Building implementation. Businesses in several countries have begun to deliver advanced FIT-OUT systems both for new construction and for retrofitting existing buildings, demonstrating the economic advantages of ‘the responsive, independent dwelling.’ This book also argues that the ‘open building’ approach is essential for the reactivation of the existing building stock for long-term value, because in the end it costs less. The book discusses these developments in residential architecture from the perspective of an infrastructure model of built environment. This model enables decision-makers to manage risk and uncertainty, while avoiding a number of problems often associated with large, fast-moving projects, such as separation and distribution of design tasks (and responsibility) and the ensuing boundary frictions. Residential Architecture as Infrastructure adds to the Routledge Open Building Series, and will appeal to architects, urban designers, researchers and policy-makers interested in this international review of current projects, policies and business activities focused on Open Building implementation.

Affordable housing is an enduring political challenge. Cities have endeavored to set international standards for this important field of architecture since the 1920s. Planners must work within a socially motivated tradition to find exemplary solutions both at the political and architectural level. This building catalogue documents over 130 residential buildings dedicated to affordable housing. It presents floor plans, large photos, key data, and clear diagrams, providing a comprehensive overview of the solutions being tested today. The publication is rounded off with ten affordable housing concepts that were designed as part of the Housing for All competition, organized by the Frankfurt Department of Planning and Housing, the Deutsches Architekturmuseum, and ABG Frankfurt Holding. Renowned architecture practices based in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and France were invited to submit design concepts for building sites in the Hilgenfeld area of Frankfurt. These concepts will reignite the contemporary discourse on affordable housing - in Frankfurt and beyond.

During the 20th century, Dublin Corporation transformed the urban landscape of Dublin. Its many housing developments sought to end a housing and public health crisis of immense proportions, the legacy of the nineteenth century. Its early engagement with the housing crisis was tentative and involved mostly small inner city schemes, many of which are unknown to present-day Dubliners. Yet, these schemes were built well and most continue to be lived in and appreciated. This book is a commemoration and an analysis of the early schemes from the 1880s to the late 1920s. These are examined in some detail and the book is comprehensively illustrated with maps, photographs and block plans. Housing policy evolved during this time and the reader will learn that the issues faced and the solutions found remain relevant to the present day. The reader will also meet many of the significant people who shaped the city; people such as Charles Cameron, H.T. O'Rourke and P.C. Cowan. The text ends with a detailed account of Marino and Drumcondra. These schemes, especially the former, represent the culmination of policy development and were seen as models for the future.
