Centering the dynamic complexities of a hyphenated cultural identity, this project serves to build ideas of home and healing for the diasporic Filipinx American individual and community. Due to the constant state of unbelonging and affinity to assimilate in America, the Filipinx American community has been endemic to oppression and mental illness. A review of Filipino psychologies and philosophies in respect to community-based art therapy praxis serves as a foundational step to create an art therapy framework specific to the diasporic Filipino culture. Utilizing collage and heuristic and autoethnographic research methods, personal archives are revisited, and cultural Filipino values, such as kapwa, are explored. The findings of this project support the need for art therapy professionals to consider understanding one’s identity and to utilize culturally-sound frameworks to better support the Filipinx American community.
