DOCOMOMO International and the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) collaborated to assess the status of education and training on twentieth-century built heritage conservation worldwide. The Conserving Modern Architecture Initiative (CMAI) of the GCI and DOCOMOMO's International Specialist Committee on Education and Training (ISC/E+T) developed and distributed an online survey aimed at understanding whether the subject of twentieth-century built heritage conservation is being taught, and, if so, where and how. In this report, we share the methodology and the findings of this survey with the goal of helping other organizations, academic institutions, and professionals involved in teaching heritage conservation develop an understanding of available resources and existing gaps in the field. The report begins with an explanation of the survey's purpose, the methodology employed, and the challenges encountered. The second section provides readers with a detailed presentation of the findings: the answers received from the institutions contacted are described and illustrated with tables and graphs. Finally, sections three and four summarize the findings and outline lessons and recommendations. The recommendations at the end of the report will guide the future initiatives of the CMAI and the DOCOMOMO ISC/E+T in their aim to contribute to twentieth-century built heritage conservation and support related educational efforts.

Over the past twenty years, there has been a fundamental shift in the institutional organization of historic preservation education. Historic preservation is the most recent arrival in the collection of built environment disciplines and therefore lacks the pedagogical depth and breadth found in allied endeavors such as architecture and planning. As the first degree programs in preservation only date to the 1970s and the first doctoral programs to the 1990s, new faculty are confronted with pedagogical challenges that are unique to this relatively nascent field. Based on a conference that included educators from around the world, Barry L. Stiefel and Jeremy C. Wells now present a collection that seeks to address fundamental issues of preservation pedagogy, outcome-based education and assessment, and global issues of authenticity and significance in historic preservation. The editors argue that the subject of the analysis has shifted from, "What is the best way to fix a historic building?" to, "What are the best ways for teaching people how to preserve historic properties (and why) according to the various standards that have been established?" This important reconsideration of the state of the field in historic preservation education will appeal to a broad audience across numerous disciplines.

"For each of the country studies in the book the authors broadly cover a number of common themes: definition of the built heritage; identification of the heritage; the preservation and protection of the heritage; conservation philosophy; sanctions and coercive measures; integrated conservation; financial resources, funding mechanisms and the regeneration of historic environments; the role of agencies and specialist organisations; and education and training." "Through these themes this book provides evidence of the different legal and policy mechanisms utilised for the protection of the built heritage within Europe. The analysis of individual countries and the group as a whole gives an assessment of how advanced current mechanisms are and the ongoing problems that remain to be managed in order to safeguard the 'common heritage'."--BOOK JACKET.

The majority of books in English on historic building conservation and heritage preservation training are often restricted to Western architecture and its origins. Consequently, the history of building conservation, the study of contemporary paradigms and case studies in most universities and within wider interest circles, predominantly in the UK, Europe, and USA focus mainly on Europe and sometimes the USA, although the latter is often excluded from European publications. With an increasingly multicultural student body in Euro-American universities and with a rising global interest in heritage preservation, there is an urgent need for publications to cover a larger geographical and social area including not only Asia, Australia, Africa and South America but also previously neglected countries in Europe like the new members of the European Community and the northern neighbour of the USA, Canada. The inclusion of the ‘other’ in built environment education in general and in building conservation in particular is a pre-requisite of cultural interaction and widening participation. International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation assesses successful contemporary conservation paradigms from around the world. The book evaluates conservation case studies from previously excluded areas of the world to create an integrated account of Historic Building Conservation that crosses the boundaries of language and culture and sets an example for further inclusive research. Analyzing the influence of financial constraints, regional conflicts, and cultural differences on the heritage of disadvantaged countries, this leading-edge volume is essential for researchers and students of heritage studies interested in understanding their topics in a wider framework.

Abstract: When designing educational programme in the field of heritage conservation, community service learning approach may not be the first thing that comes to most heritage conservation educator's mind. In this study the researcher has engaged in a discussion of the association of community service learning to heritage conservation education. The researcher have tried to make clear why she believe that community service learning, as an innovative pedagogical approach, has important things to say about today's heritage conservation education. Proceeding from fieldworks, through analysis to explanation, based on direct and participant observations and interviews; two heritage training projects are reviewed to illustrate how community service learning can facilitate heritage conservation education. The researcher hope that other researchers will learn from the study, and educators will be able to critically examine which kind of pedagogical approach is more appropriate for today's heritage conservation education. Professionalism entails the conduct, aims and qualities that characterise a profession. The term is also used to describe education and training standards for the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a specific profession. In practice, professional standards of practice and ethics are agreed upon and maintained by recognised associations. In the past, professionalism has not occupied a central place in built heritage discussions, policy and research. Recent changes in terms of public attitudes and sustainability concerns have had a cumulative impact on the requirements for professionalism in the built heritage sector. The future success of the sector will depend on the availability of adequate professionals and an appropriately skilled workforce. In practice, the built heritage sector involves much more than interventions to conserve, preserve, rehabilitate or restore a heritage structure. Bringing a project to fruition begins with the formulation of a policy, proceeds to the design and execution of intervention strategies and ends with ongoing maintenance of heritage structures and related future programming. This process requires sufficient interactions between different professionals to obtain a common vision and hold that vision throughout a project. At the same time, the sustainability of the sector is also defined by effective governance, societal support and cultural rationales. Professionalism in the Built Heritage Sector contains reports on the lectures of the international conference organized by the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (Leuven, Belgium, February 5th-8th, 2018). The contributions in this volume meet the increasing demand for shared information to support the transition towards a more sustainable conservation process. The volume consists of three main parts that deal with practice-led research or scientific research: "Profiles and capacities", "Education, training and quality labels", and "Obstacles and changes".
