Benih merupakan salah satu faktor produksi yang sangat penting dalam budi daya ikan, meskipun dalam usaha budi daya ikan hanya kira-kira 20% dari total biaya produksi. Keberadaan benih tidak bisa tergantikan sehingga benih harus tersedia secara terusmenerus, semua kebutuhan untuk budi daya terpenuhi dengan kualitas yang baik. Produksi benih dan ikan konsumsi di Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta pada tahun 2019, sebelum adanya wabah pandemi Covid-19, dengan urutan produksi tertinggi pada ikan konsumsi, yaitu lele dumbo diikuti nila, gurami, bawal air tawar, lele lokal, tawes, dan ikan mas, sedangkan produksi benih tertinggi pada ikan nila kemudian diikuti oleh benih ikan lele dumbo, gurami, lele lokal, bawal air tawar, ikan mas, dan tawes. Jumlah produksi benih ikan nila tahun 2019 sebanyak 736.211.000 ekor. benih lele dumbo 591.682.000 ekor, sedangkan benih ikan yang lainnya di bawah 100 juta bahkan paling banyak 10 juta. Peran benih pada budi daya sangatlah penting dan akan memengaruhi keberhasilan budi daya ikan. Perhatian tentang benih yang ditebar dimulai dari kualitas benih pada saat di tempat pembenih, meliputi benih yang dihasilkan dari perkawinan induk yang berkualitas baik, kemudian benih dipelihara dengan standar pendederan yang baik. dilanjutkan dengan pemanenan benih yang diikuti dengan grading untuk memilah ukuran benih. Kegiatan pemanenan dan grading harus dilakukan dengan hati-hati, jika tidak hati-hati mengakibatkan benih akan terluka sehingga benih yang ditebar mudah diserang jamur. Kegiatan penanganan benih setelah dari pembenih yang perlu diperhatikan yaitu tentang pengangkutan.
