In Bullet for a Ranger, the latest novel in the Texas Ranger Jim Blawcyzk series, Jim is locked in a jail cell in the town of Quitaque, accused of murdering a saloon woman while in a drunken rage. Even though the idea of the happily married, loyal family man, non-drinking and church-going Blawcyzk being involved with a saloon entertainer, then killing her, is extremely far-fetched, the evidence against the Ranger Lieutenant is so strong even he has to admit he stands a good chance of being convicted. Worse, Jim has no recollection of the night or the events in question. His only sure ally is the priest from the local Catholic mission, and even the good padre has his doubts about Blawcyzk's innocence. Hoped-for help from one of his fellow Rangers has failed to materialize, and the date for Blawcyzk's trial is fast approaching. Somehow, Jim must figure out who is really the woman's killer, or face a quick hanging. Solving the mystery from his cell is proving to be an almost insurmountable task.

Captain Gus Rodgers of the Texas Rangers is dying—and before he goes, he needs Jim's help to free his grandson from a Mexican prison. Trouble is, the Federale general holding him wants the head of the boy's brother, Billy, who has already confessed to murdering the general's daughter. Gus believes Billy deserves to die. The old ranger's just worried he won't live long enough to do the deed—which is where Jim Glass comes in. Gus's wild grandsons may be a lot of things—brutal, ignorant, and dangerous, to name three—but they may not actually be guilty of this particular crime. And when the truth comes out, there's bound to be a war. And no one's going to escape unbloodied . . .

Texas Ranger Lieutenant Jim Blawcyzk is on the trail of the men responsible for the killing of a fellow Ranger and the disappearance of another. Jim's search will draw him into a web of deception, greed, and murder, where even a lawman's best friend may well be his deadly enemy. As Jim inserted the knife into a chink in the rocks, a bullet smacked into the wall just alongside his head, followed by the sharp crack of a rifle. Jim dove to his belly, pinned behind the inadequate cover of the ledge's slight lip as the hidden rifleman swept the rocks with an almost impossibly rapid fire. As the barrage of lead stopped for a brief instant, Jim chanced lifting his head ever so slightly, scanning the canyon in an attempt to locate the bushwhacker. "Got him spotted, on the rim over to the other side of the canyon," he said, as a glint of sunlight reflected off the gunman's rifle barrel for an instant. "Not that it'll do me much good," he muttered, ducking back as his assailant finished reloading and again swept the ledge with a rapid-fire volley. "My Winchester's still on my saddle, and he's way outta range for a six-gun, even tryin' a lucky shot. He can keep me pinned down here long as he wants. And sooner or later he's gonna nail me." As bullets whined over his precarious perch, Jim glanced downward, then, taking a desperate chance, threw himself over the edge of the shelf.

From their founding in the 1820s up to the modern age, the Texas Rangers have shown the ability to adapt and survive. Part of that survival depended on their use of firearms. The evolving technology of these weapons often determined the effectiveness of these early day Rangers. John Coffee “Jack” Hays and Samuel Walker would leave their mark on the Rangers by incorporating new technology which allowed them to alter tactics when confronting their adversaries. The Frontier Battalion was created at about the same time as the Colt Peacemaker and the Winchester 73—these were the guns that “won the West.” Firearms of the Texas Rangers, with more than 180 photographs, tells the history of the Texas Rangers primarily through the use of their firearms. Author Doug Dukes narrates famous episodes in Ranger history, including Jack Hays and the Paterson, the Walker Colt, the McCulloch Colt Revolver (smuggled through the Union blockade during the Civil War), and the Frontier Battalion and their use of the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester and Sharps carbines. Readers will delight in learning of Frank Hamer’s marksmanship with his Colt Single Action Army and his Remington, along with Captain J.W. McCormick and his two .45 Colt pistols, complete with photos. Whether it was a Ranger in 1844 with his Paterson on patrol for Indians north of San Antonio, or a Ranger in 2016 with his LaRue 7.62 rifle working the Rio Grande looking for smugglers and terrorists, the technology may have changed, but the gritty job of the Rangers has not.

Selling The Silver Bullet written by Avi Santo and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-15 with Social Science categories.

Originating as a radio series in 1933, the Lone Ranger is a cross-media star who has appeared in comic strips, comic books, adult and juvenile novels, feature films and serials, clothing, games, toys, home furnishings, and many other consumer products. In his prime, he rivaled Mickey Mouse as one of the most successfully licensed and merchandised children's properties in the United States, while in more recent decades, the Lone Ranger has struggled to resonate with consumers, leading to efforts to rebrand the property. The Lone Ranger's eighty-year history as a lifestyle brand thus offers a perfect case study of how the fields of licensing, merchandizing, and brand management have operated within shifting industrial and sociohistorical conditions that continue to redefine how the business of entertainment functions. Deciphering how iconic characters gain and retain their status as cultural commodities, Selling the Silver Bullet focuses on the work done by peripheral consumer product and licensing divisions in selectively extending the characters' reach and in cultivating investment in these characters among potential stakeholders. Tracing the Lone Ranger's decades-long career as intellectual property allows Avi Santo to analyze the mechanisms that drive contemporary character licensing and entertainment brand management practices, while at the same time situating the licensing field's development within particular sociohistorical and industrial contexts. He also offers a nuanced assessment of the ways that character licensing firms and consumer product divisions have responded to changing cultural and economic conditions over the past eighty years, which will alter perceptions about the creative and managerial authority these ancillary units wield.
