Excerpt from Bulletin of the Terrestrial Electric Observatory of Fernando Sanford, Palo Alto, California, Vol. 2: Summary of Observations on Earth Potential, Air Potential Gradients, and Earth-Currents; September 1923-December 1924 In Volume I of the bulletin of this observatory were published the results of a long series of measurements of what was believed to be a diurnal variation of the electric potential of the earth at this station, and a discussion in which the proposed explanation of this variation was found in an electrostatic induction by a negatively electrified sun and a negatively electrified moon upon the earth. The method by which this diurnal varia tion was detected was described, but owing to lack of space the possible causes of variation in a quadrant electrometer used as was the one in the investigation were not fully discussed. Since that time there have been a number of suggestions of other possible ways than the one suggested of accounting for the observed results, so that it seems proper to begin this report with a discussion of these possibilities. The arrangement of the electrometer and its connections was shown in Figure 2 of Volume I, and for the purpose of this discussion this figure is reproduced here as Figure 1. In this figure, E represents a quadrant electrometer of which a and b are the quadrant pairs. The electrometer stands on a wooden pier, which is not shown in the figure. One quadrant pair, marked a, is connected by a copper wire to the metal case of the instrument, and through it to the wire cage surrounding the whole apparatus and to the water system of Palo Alto. The other pair of quad rants, b, is connected by an enameled copper wire to an insulated con ductor, C, which consists of a coil of copper wire which is immersed in a dilute copper sulphate solution in a Dewar flask. The flask is contained in a metal case, and this case is placed in a heavy porcelain jar, from which it is insulated by paraffin blocks. The jar has a porcelain cover through which the Wire from 17 passes, and the wire is insulated from both the jar and the Dewar flask by paraffin plugs. For most of the distance between the electrometer and C the connecting wire passes through glass tubes, but these tubes are open at both ends. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Terrestrial Electric Observatory of Fernando Sanford, Palo Alto, California, Vol. 1: Summary of Observations for the Period May, 1920-August, 1923 The investigation reported in the following pages had its origin in the belief that the phenomena of static electricity require for their ex planation the existence of a very great negative charge upon the earth.* The existence of such a charge seems necessary also for explaining the atmospheric potential gradient as well as the magnetic field of the earth. Since the sun is magnetized in the same direction as the earth and rotates in the same direction upon its axis, it would seem that if the magnetic field of the earth is produced by the rotation of its negative charge, the sun, which has a magnetic field about fifty times as strong as that of the earth, must have a much greater negative charge. This, to gether with the fact that enormous negative charges have been shown to persist for months in the neighborhood of sun spots, while all attempts to observe the Stark effect around the borders of the areas known to be charged have failed, seemed to the writer to indicate that the sun is charged to a high enough potential to produce measurable induced charges upon the earth. Excerpt from Bulletin of the Terrestrial Electric Observatory of Fernando Sanford, 1928, Vol. 5: Palo Alto, California The agreement with the curve for the daily variation of atmospheric potential gradient for the month of March is much closer, though it seems improbable that there should be a potential gradient inside a wire cage in a closed room. Excerpt from Bulletin of Terrestrial Electric Observatory of Fernando Sanford, Palo Alto, California, Vol. 4: March 1927 General outline of work for the yam - During the year 1926 observa tions on the diurnal variation of earth potential and air potential were carried on at this observatory. On account of the serious disturbances due to ground currents from trolley lines, the work of previous years on earth-current variations was discontinued. No records were made during the month of May. No air-potential records were made in February, and no earth-potential records in April. During the year the variation in earth potential was recorded on 244 days and air-potential records were obtained for 225 days. The method of making these records has been described in previous numbers of this Bulletin. Briefly, two quadrant electrometers were used. Both stood on the same wooden pier inside a cage of wire netting which was four feet square at its base and eight feet high. The electrometer used for measuring variations of earth potential had one pair of quadrants earthed through the case of the instrument, the wire cage, and the water system of Palo Alto. The other pair of quadrants was connected by an insulated wire to an insulated metal conductor which was inside a thermos bottle, a metal case, and a porcelain jar. The variation in potential differ ence between the two pairs of quadrants has been attributed to a variation in the electrical potential of the ground at this place. Reasons why this change has been attributed to the earth rather than to the insulated con ductor have been given in previous volumes, especially in Volume II. The air-potential electrometer had its two pairs of quadrants connected to two copper balls, one seven inches and the other eight inches in diameter, which were suspended above the roof of the observatory. One of these balls was three meters above the other, which was only one meter above the roof. Both balls were enameled to insure high insulation, and both were suspended by flint glass insulators inside of bottles from which the bottoms had been removed. This was to Shield them from rain and dust. The wires leading to the electrometer were heavy, rubber-insulated wires which were also shellacked. It seems improbable that the balls or con ducting wires could have taken rapidly changing charges from the air.
