Utilizing a simple time dependent one-dimensional example as a test case the report discusses a solution which represents the important characteristics of a buoyancy dominated shear flow by solving four partial differential equations in addition to the mean equations of motion. This suggested model solves equations for total turbulent kinetic energy, total turbulent temperature fluctuations, eddy dissipation, and thermal eddy dissipation. Three separate versions of this model are discussed. The final version replicates results for a much more complicated version. The advantages for two and three dimensional problems are even greater. In Fascination of Fluid Dynamics contains a collection of papers by international experts in hydrodynamics, based on oral presentations at a symposium held in honour of Professor Leen van Wijngaarden on his 65th birthday. The book begins with a personal sketch of his life and scientific career. It continues with a mixture of papers that address recent developments in various branches of fluid mechanics. Many of the papers cover different aspects of multiphase flows: bubble dynamics, cavitation, bubbles and particles in turbulent flows, suspension flows, and wave phenomena in fluidised beds. Other topics that are addressed include: dynamics of jets, shock waves, MHD turbulence, selforganisation phenomena in 2D turbulence, vortex rings and the thermodynamics of tropical cyclones. This edited volume will be valuable reading for researchers, engineers and students interested in hydrodynamics, and in particular in multiphase flows.

The main thrust of our studies has been focused on studying the effects of buoyancy on fluid flows and turbulence, having direct significance to geophysical flows, in particular keeping in mind the effects on the mixing of scalars, such as salinity and temperature.

This comprehensive book is based on the Navier-Stokes and other continuum equations for fluids. It interprets the analytical and numerical solutions of the equations of fluid motion. Topics included are turbulence, and how, why, and where it occurs; mathematical apparatus used for the representation and study of turbulence; continuum equations used for the analysis of turbulence; ensemble, time, and space averages as they are applied to turbulent quantities; the closure problem of the averaged equations and possible closure schemes; Fourier analysis and the spectral form of the continuum equations, both averaged and unaveraged; nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory.
