In recent years, the wearing of the full-face veil or burqa/niqab has proved a controversial issue in many multi-cultural European societies. Focussing on the socio-legal and human rights angle, this volume provides a useful comparative perspective on how the issue has been dealt with across a range of European states as well as at European institutional level. In so doing, the work draws a theoretical framework for the place of religion between public and private space. With contributions from leading experts from law, sociology and politics, the book presents a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to one of the most contentious and symbolic issues of recent times.

When was the last time you heard a Muslim woman speak for herself without a filter? It's Not About the Burqa is an anthology of essays by Muslim women about the contemporary Muslim female experience. In 2016, Mariam Khan read that David Cameron had linked the radicalization of Muslim men to the ‘traditional submissiveness’ of Muslim women. Mariam felt pretty sure she didn’t know a single Muslim woman who would describe herself that way. Why was she hearing about Muslim women from people who were neither Muslim, nor female? Years later the state of the national discourse has deteriorated even further, and Muslim women’s voices are still pushed to the fringes – the figures leading the discussion are white and male. Taking one of the most politicized and misused words associated with Muslim women and Islamophobia, It’s Not About the Burqa is poised to change all that. Here are voices you won’t see represented in the national news headlines: seventeen Muslim women speaking frankly about the hijab and wavering faith, about love and divorce, about feminism, queer identity, sex, and the twin threats of a disapproving community and a racist country. With a mix of British and international women writers, from activist Mona Eltahawy's definition of a revolution to journalist and broadcaster Saima Mir telling the story of her experience of arranged marriage, from author Sufiya Ahmed on her Islamic feminist icon to playwright Afshan D'souza-Lodhi's moving piece about her relationship with her hijab, these essays are funny, warm, sometimes sad, and often angry, and each of them is a passionate declaration calling time on the oppression, the lazy stereotyping, the misogyny and the Islamophobia. What does it mean, exactly, to be a Muslim woman in the West today? According to the media, it’s all about the burqa. Here’s what it’s really about. Shortlisted for Foyles Non-Fiction Book of the Year 'An incredibly important collection of essays that explores the pressures of being a Muslim woman today . . . passionate, angry, self-effacing, nuanced and utterly compelling in every single way' - Nikesh Shukla, editor of The Good Immigrant 'Engrossing . . . fascinating . . . courageous' – Observer

Advance Praise for Behind the Burqa "Whenever and wherever adults make war, children die and women are subjected to fear and humiliation. This is true of Afghanistan too. Read this harrowing book. The tragic yet heroic tale of two women is told with great simplicity. They will haunt you." -Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate "The stories of Sulima and Hala achingly articulate the twin and enduring legacies of misogyny and violence. A critical historical document, Behind the Burqa ultimately reveals the unbreakable strength of Afghan women." -Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues Founder and Artistic Director, V-Day "Behind the Burqa provides important information about conditions in Afghanistan, as well as the plight of asylum-seekers in the United States. I highly recommend this book to all people who are concerned about human rights, both at home and abroad." -Senator Sam Brownback, (R. Kansas) ranking member, Immigration Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary "This book is a gripping reading experience, and it also offers important suggestions for those who would like to participate in making our asylum politics more humane." -Eleanor Acer, Director, Asylum Program, Lawyers Committee for Human Rights "This book shows the injustices suffered by innocent women seeking asylum in the U. S. and the power of religious faith to provide hope and courage even in prison." -Fauziya Kassindja, author of Do They Hear You When You Cry "Sulima and Hala epitomize the worldwide struggle of women for equality and justice. Their story is gripping and illuminating." -Jessica Neuwirth, President of Equality Now

Debates about whether the Wahhabist practice of face-veiling for women should be banned in modern liberal states tend to generate more heat than light. This book brings clarity to what can be a confusing subject by disentangling the different strands of the problem and breaking through the accusations of misogyny and Islamophobia. Explaining and expounding the ideas of giants of the liberal tradition including Locke, Mill, and Rawls as well as contemporary thinkers like Nussbaum, Kymlicka and Oshana, the book considers a variety of conceptions of liberalism and how they affect the response to the question. Directly addressing issues facing many of today's societies, it unpicks whether paternalism on grounds of welfare can be justified within liberalism, the value of personal autonomy and the problem of whether a socially influenced choice counts as a genuine preference. Covering the role of multiculturalism, gender issues and feminism, this comprehensive philosophical study of a major political question gets to the heart of whether a ban could be justified in principle, and also questions whether any such ban could prove efficacious in achieving its end.

The Burqa master is a paradoxical drama and comedy following the lives of an Iranian father and son exiled in London. The old man, a diabetic sugar addict is lost between the mosque and Turkish delight. He shoots up insulin passing from stupor and self-pity to holy fervour, crashing about, shouting sermons and dropping syringes around the house. His son Hamid, living the Muslim paradise here and now, tries to humour his father by working in the family shop and taking part in the dawn prayers accompanied by Muezzin chants on the ghetto blaster. But Hamid also has a secret life recruiting female shop clients to sex sessions. Disguised as a widow in a burqa he gives 'English lessons' to these Muslim housewives in the privacy of their bedrooms, while their husbands happily pay. The precarious harmony between father and son is destroyed by a series of accidents which are farcical yet tragic, causing the old man to relive a dark secret buried in his faded memories as he relives his own public flogging for a crime he'd commit again given the chance.
