This volume explores two aspects of change within higher education: macro factors governing and influencing the institutional environment, and micro issues taking place within the institutions themselves. The first part of the book examines some of the micro issues that influence business and economics pedagogy. It presents reflections and analyses of teaching roles and values, the enhancement of the student learning experience with technology and real world experiences, and what students want and need to learn. The second part of the book looks at the wider institutional environment of change – the shifts in values, new stakeholders, and a change of focus toward developing skills students need to succeed in business. The book highlights the inter-related nature of these changes and shows that both aspects are important in motivating and inspiring students to be able participants in a 21st century global society. Its focus on interdisciplinarity, curriculum structures, and changing stakeholders helps to analyse the roles and models of business and economics education in addressing the needs of today’s global environment.

Business and management education has an important impact on business practice throughout the world. To a very large extent, possession of the MBA degree is a passport into the upper reaches of management, and CEOs of many major corporations have earned an MBA. It is a reasonable inference that the education received by these leaders and managers during their MBA experience has an important impact on the way that businesses throughout the world are led and managed and that major corporate decisions are made. The heart of the MBA education is the curriculum, and curriculum design is perhaps the most important strategic function for a business school faculty to undertake. In order to understand the many issues concerning this contemporary curriculum review, this book examines three related contextual domains. First, it details the long-term growth of business and management education. Second, it examines the major theoretical and empirical literatures on organizational evolution and decision making, paying special attention to decision making in institutions of higher education. Finally, the book describes the previous major curriculum review at Columbia Business School in the late 1950s and the subsequent changes that formed the curriculum that was changed in 1992. This book demonstrates what can be achieved by an institution that sets high standards for its business education, and assists faculty and administrators in other schools of business and management as they contemplate revision of their curricula. In addition, it provides a prime example of curriculum design effort in one of the leading institutions worldwide. Finally, it will be of interest to scholars in several different fields, notably, higher education curriculum review, organizational decision making and long-run organizational evolution.

The workplace is changing drastically these days. As a consequence of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) revolution, new economic activities emerge, the production process changes, people use different communication tools, and organizational structures are adjusted. All these changes relate to the heart of business and economics, and there is no doubt that they will also influence education in these areas. Of course ICT provides new technologies to facilitate learning, but a changing workplace also requires a renewed focus within the curriculum of economics and business education. If ICT is leading to profound change in the workplace, is innovation then only a matter of introducing more technology in education? Unfortunately, this is not necessarily true. The translation of changes in the workplace into an improved curriculum requires serious analysis of the essence of the changes at the work place, and the way technology may enable student learning. For example, relevant knowledge is changing faster and faster. Does this mean that we have to adopt the curriculum faster and faster? Perhaps not, as students will have a labor market career of 30 or 40 years. Focusing on today’s knowledge – even if it is very up-to-date – loses more and more value if the life cycle of knowledge becomes shorter. Increased speed of change also implies a decrease in the value of knowing all these things.

Business schools are facing ever increasing internationalization: students are far less homogenous than before, faculty members come from different countries, and teaching is carried out in second (or even third) languages. As a result business schools and their teachers wrestle with new challenges as these changes accelerate. Teaching and Learning at Business Schools brings together contributions from business school managers and educators involved in the International Teachers Programme; a faculty development programme started by Harvard Business School more than 30 years ago and now run by a consortium of the London Business School, Manchester Business School, Kellogg, Stern School of Business, INSEAD, HEC Paris, IAE Aix-en-Provence, IMD, SDA Bocconi Milan and Stockholm School of Economics. The book tackles themes both within the classroom – teaching across different contexts and cultures - and outside the classroom - leading and developing business schools, designing and running programmes, developing faculty members. The authors provide direction, ideas and techniques for transforming business education that are accessible to everyone.
