The question "What is human nature?" is in vogue today. Like everything else, this concept is being deconstructed in the context of the reigning ideology of individualistic materialism. Is there a fixed human nature, or is this simply a manipulatable social construct with no objective reference? This book says: "Yes, there is: the imago Dei: man/woman created in the image of God." Hobson argues that this text from Genesis 1:26-28 is a God-given anthropological revelation that establishes the relational bond of human beings with their Creator and also with his creation, for which the imago equips us to be responsible stewards. Many of Hobson's essays were delivered as talks in parishes. They explore from multiple angles the import of the imago Dei for theological and sacramental reflection, apologetics, aesthetics, art, and, at a hands-on practical level, for pastoral counseling and inner healing. His texts, one of which opens with a discussion of genocide, contain incisive critiques of the dark side of modernity alongside wide-ranging demonstrations of the pertinence of the imago Dei to the current debates about human dignity and rights. His book is a ringing call to the church to take the measure of the value of this anthropological revelation for its proclamation of the gospel.

In the history of biblical interpretation and dogmatic speculation, the “image of God” in humanity has proved remarkably prolific as a source of exegetical and theological discussion. In Genesis 1:26–27, the Bible expounds that God created man in His own image, and in His image, he created male and female. The literature on this topic continues to be overwhelming despite several exhaustive treatments spanning decades among biblical scholars. The act of posing several questions resulted in different answers from various sources. For example, what exactly is the image of God? Is the image of God spiritual or physical? Is the likeness of God the same as the image of God, or is it different? Does sin destroy the image of God? A tremendous amount of ink has been spilled to answer these questions, but the debate continues. Scholars and commentators have proactively tried to identify various dimensions of human capacity as the definitive elements of the image of God, such as the substantive interpretation, which most often associates the image of God with the abstract ideas of reason, conscience, and free will. Others have argued in favor of the royal or functional interpretation, wherein the image of God is perceived as being symbolic of our dominion over the earth. At the same time, others argued for the relational interpretation, which states that God’s image in humanity is found within the relationships we establish and maintain. All of these different interpretations of the image of God have tremendous validity; they include various aspects of human nature and more. However, this study explores another concept that has not been adequately understood and appreciated—the image of God as a reflection of divine order and intended suitability within the design of creation. The idea of male and female being a reflection of God is incredibly meaningful. In what follows, I will contend that male and female created in the image of God are a reflection of order and suitability in design. This is not only seen in the context of human beings, but also, when we look across the spectrum of species on earth, we perceive a reflection of God’s divine order and suitability embedded within the design of creation. The body of the research is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter discusses the creation account in Genesis 1–2, which provides the foundational biblical image of humanity. Genesis 1–2 tells the story of a God of order, not disorder. God’s order facilitates the appropriate paradigm for human order and suitability in design. A second area for examination is the degree of influence of other Ancient Near East creation accounts on the shaping of Genesis 1–2. The second chapter analyzes several interpretations of the image of God offered by prominent scholars, such as J. Richard Middleton and John Kilner. Middleton provides a worthy contribution to the discussion and exegesis of the image of God. He views the human creature as the one delegated by God to take over the task of mediating and representing the divine presence on earth. Kilner believes that being created in God’s image is not a matter of human attributes but specifically how people reflect God. In other words, humans made according to the image of God need to reflect godly attributes. Each of these interpretations has significant strengths; however, we see an emphasis on male and female that is explained by the recognition of suitability in design as a reflection of the image of God. This is ultimately an aspect of what it means to be created in the image of God. The third chapter provides an exegetical and biblical examination of Genesis 1:26–27, 5:1–3, and 9:6 to understand the meaning of “image” (tselem) and “likeness” (damut). In God’s divine prerogative, he chose to create humanity in His image and likeness to reflect His divine order and suitability in design. Chapter four presents a full range of relevant New Testament texts in explicating the links between the image of God in creation and the image of God in Christ. Chapter five comprises the heart of the dissertation—it considers the significance of “male and female created in the image of God” as a reflection of divine “order and suitability” in design, reflecting the identity of God as the Creator. God’s order and suitability can be seen in various passages in the Wisdom literature. Wisdom literature teaches us that there is a cosmic order. In the book of Proverbs, this cosmic order is personified as female; she is hokma, “Wisdom.” In the book of Ecclesiastes, the author states that “God makes everything suitable in its time” (Eccl 3:11). After a thorough analysis of the materials, it will become evident that “male and female created in the image of God” is a reflection of divine order and suitability in our responsibility of stewardship on the earth. This is a true reflection of God, as affirmed in the creation narrative. Chapter six focuses on the compatibility and suitability of God’s design of male and female. This will be accomplished by a close reading of the Song of Songs and its affiliation to Genesis 1–2 to present a framework for understanding male and female as being created in the image of God. Chapter seven explores the theological implications of a Christian worldview and the Christian response to societal confusion. Chapter eight briefly summarizes the most important findings and provides a conclusion.

Misunderstandings about what it means for humans to be created in God's image have wreaked devastation throughout history -- for example, slavery in the U. S., genocide in Nazi Germany, and the demeaning of women everywhere. In Dignity and Destiny John Kilner explores what the Bible itself teaches about humanity being in God's image. He discusses in detail all of the biblical references to the image of God, interacts extensively with other work on the topic, and documents how misunderstandings of it have been so problematic. People made according to God's image, Kilner says, have a special connection with God and are intended to be a meaningful reflection of him. Because of sin, they don't actually reflect him very well, but Kilner shows why the popular idea that sin has damaged the image of God is mistaken. He also clarifies the biblical difference between being God's image (which Christ is) and being in God's image (which humans are). He explains how humanity's creation and renewal in God's image are central, respectively, to human dignity and destiny. Locating Christ at the center of what God's image means, Kilner charts a constructive way forward and reflects on the tremendously liberating impact that a sound understanding of the image of God can have in the world today.

Who do you resemble? As kids, we may remember people telling us that we looked like or acted like one of our parents. Since we spent so much time with them in our formative years, it would make logical sense for us to then emulate their behaviors, attitudes, and mannerisms. As children of God, we spend enough time with Him to naturally replicate the behaviors and attitudes, also known as the fruits of the Spirit. These are supposed to set us apart from the world and signify who we belong to and who our spiritual father is. In Genesis 1:26, God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness . . ." From the beginning, our purpose was to reflect Christ in all we say and do-not only to glorify God, but to bring others to saving knowledge of Him through our emulation of Christ. Join the GR8 Relationships ministry in Made in God's Image Really? to examine the design of men and women and how each design reflects God's image.

In the beginning, God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them." (Genesis 1:26-27 - KJV) Man fell from his original state, which had a negative cosmic effect on all creation. The word 'fell' suggest a descent from our original form, function, structure, and faculty. We could no longer be identified in our original form. The process of faith in Yeshua (Jesus) is to take us back to where we fell from; it's a transmutative, transfigurative process that seeks to complete the full restoration of our body back to its divine essence, allowing it to do all that it was made to do. Every believer needs to grow into the fullness of Christ until we are fully conformed to His image. We were always meant to become like Yeshua (Jesus) and function in the same capacity. This book is designed to challenge your present perception and paradigm and re-establish a Biblical foundation with an open invitation to whomever will.

All people have dignity because they are created in the image of God. This theological belief has been a liberating force among its believers, providing a myriad of beautiful implications in our world. On the other hand, where the idea of being created in God’s image has been misunderstood, the implications can be devastating. Created in the Image of God brings together leading experts to discuss what it means to be made in image of God and to bring clarity and guidance for implications in the midst of our cultural confusion. The overall approach of this work, though distinct and focused in each of the chapters, reflects a consensus understanding that men and women have been created in God’s image, that they have fallen and are influenced by sin, that Christ has provided redemption through his vicarious death and resurrection, and that there is hope in the promise of eternal life in Christ. Christ succeeded where Adam failed (Rom 5:12-21; 1 Cor 15), allowing those who trust in him to enjoy and glorify him forever. The rich chapters within, and their helpful application to human dignity issues, will help our world to regain a sense of the marvelous privilege that is ours as image bearers and how that should impact our engagement with complex dignity issues of our day.
