This book proposes a new way to approach comparative international development by focusing on time and timing in economic and social development. The UK industrialized over two centuries, and then started to de-industrialize in the late 1960s. Today, the most rapid developers experience aspects of industrialization and de-industrialization simultaneously. It is no longer clear that industrialization offers the path of growth it once did; industrialization has become 'thin.' Demographic and social challenges that earlier developers faced sequentially now come at the same time. Rapid growers experience compression most acutely, but the spatial and temporal fusing of past and present is widespread, affecting high-, middle-, and lower-income countries alike. Timing refers to the differences in historical periods in which development takes place. The geopolitical, institutional and technological environment for countries recently integrated into the global economy has been vastly different from that of the preceding postwar decades of 'embedded liberalism,' although it does contain echoes of the 'first globalization' and 'first financialization' a century ago. The first era of liberalism did not end well, and the second is similarly foundering on the rocks of nationalism and protectionism, as it is being battered by a global pandemic. The authors propose an interdisciplinary conceptual framework based on co-evolving state-market and organization-technology dyads, which will help readers make sense of contemporary development across multiple societies, sectors and geographies, and provide a template for historical comparison.

The Political Economy Of Sustainable Development written by Timothy Cadman and has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-27 with Business & Economics categories.
Since the Rio ‘Earth’ Summit of 1992, sustainable development has become the major policy response to tackling global environmental degradation, from climate change to loss of biodiversity and deforestation. Market instruments such as emissions trading, payments for ecosystem services and timber certification have become the main mechanisms for financing the sustainable management of the earth’s natural resources. Yet how effective are they – and do they help the planet and developing countries, or merely uphold the economic status quo? This book investigates these important questions. Providing a comprehensive analysis and the latest research on sustainable development, the authors compare the divergent approaches to emissions trading. Included is a detailed investigation into illegal logging and the effectiveness of policy responses, with an evaluation of different forest certification schemes. Biodiversity offsets and environmental payments are also explored. Integral to the book are interviews and opinions of the key stakeholders in the political economy of sustainable development. This uniquely comprehensive analysis of the governance quality of different sustainable development mechanisms, unprecedented in its panorama of comparative case studies, is essential reading for all those in the policy, academic and non-governmental communities.

Mobile Data Mining written by Yuan Yao and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-31 with Computers categories.
This SpringerBrief presents a typical life-cycle of mobile data mining applications, including: data capturing and processing which determines what data to collect, how to collect these data, and how to reduce the noise in the data based on smartphone sensors feature engineering which extracts and selects features to serve as the input of algorithms based on the collected and processed data model and algorithm design In particular, this brief concentrates on the model and algorithm design aspect, and explains three challenging requirements of mobile data mining applications: energy-saving, personalization, and real-time Energy saving is a fundamental requirement of mobile applications, due to the limited battery capacity of smartphones. The authors explore the existing practices in the methodology level (e.g. by designing hierarchical models) for saving energy. Another fundamental requirement of mobile applications is personalization. Most of the existing methods tend to train generic models for all users, but the authors provide existing personalized treatments for mobile applications, as the behaviors may differ greatly from one user to another in many mobile applications. The third requirement is real-time. That is, the mobile application should return responses in a real-time manner, meanwhile balancing effectiveness and efficiency. This SpringerBrief targets data mining and machine learning researchers and practitioners working in these related fields. Advanced level students studying computer science and electrical engineering will also find this brief useful as a study guide.

Sport Coach Education, Development, and Assessment offers a range of coach assessment ideas and practices from leaders in the coach education and development field. A combination of theory- and practice-focused chapters aims to stimulate thoughts, dialogue, and actions. Sport coaches play an increasingly important role in delivering positive outcomes through sport for individuals, groups, and societies at large. It is understandable, therefore, that attention is increasingly being directed towards how coaches are supported in their roles. Perhaps the most dominant support mechanism is large-scale coach education programmes. These professional development opportunities invite coaches to participate in a learning experience which typically involves exposure to new ideas, opportunities to practice, and an assessment. Much has been said and written about the extent to which these programmes are effective and the degree to which they contribute to coach learning, or not. These discussions typically reference the learning environment, nature of the curriculum, and report coaches’ experiences. However, lacking in these discussions is any deliberation over coach assessment, as a consistent feature of nearly all of these programmes, the world over. This book reflects a very deliberate attempt to platform and promote the issue of coach assessment. This book is designed to offer support and guidance to sport coaches who are engaged in assessment, coach educators/developers who are delivering assessment activities, and programme designers/policy architects who are creating learning opportunities for coaches.
