Mythos And Logos In The Thought Of Carl Jung written by Walter A. Shelburne and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-07-08 with Psychology categories.

The author explores and defends the bold thesis that the idea of the collective unconscious can be reconciled with a scientific world outlook as he sketches a big picture from Jung’s psychological viewpoint. In his examination of Jung’s archetypes, Shelburne considers the chief critical views of the scientific import of Jung’s thesis as he discusses the issue of rationality posed by the theory. There is also a discussion of how the ideas of James Hillman contrast with those of Jung on the issue of the scientific nature of archetypes. Shelburne presents scientific evidence for the existence of archetypes and shows how the theory fits in with modern evolutionary biology.

All suppositions presented in this article have been moving us to better understanding the contents of the unconscious stratum of human psyche, the ones which happen to be completely independent either from each other or racial or social factors. Even if we were to accept Jung's theory of "dividing man's psyche" we think it would be his personal unconscious, which contains some very definite individual structure or system meant to define his personal psychological and physiological characteristics because the unconscious sphere of one's psyche directly controls many physiological reactions. The personal unconscious should be able to tell everything of one's personality not by examining it through its collective values, but in the light of its individual archetypes. It should be able to explain everything about a person with respect to his individual perception of the world and of himself, his purpose, his behavior both in the social and natural environment, his strategies and tactics, his way of thinking, his unconscious motivations, his needs, emotions, inclinations, preferences, meaning of his existence, etc. After reviewing both our practical and theoretical research, and focusing on Jung's theory as to the influence of the collective unconscious on individual human psyche, it would be essential to examine this issue from the standpoint of the psychology of individual distinctions. It's obvious that without finding individual archetypal patterns as the basis for human personality, solving any individual or social-collective problems wouldn't be possible since any society consists of individuals constantly affecting one another. Carl Jung, Darwin of the Mind is a review and an explanation of Jung's thought set in an evolutionary context. Jung explored the human psyche throughout his long life. His writings, of astonishing scope and depth, elaborate on imagery that can be found in rituals, myths and fables worldwide as well as in the dreams, visions and fantasies of his patients and himself. Jung pursued common threads of meaning to the point of becoming deeply versed in the esoterica of Eastern mysticism, Gnosticism, and alchemy. Taken collectively, Jung's works develop a coherent theory about how the psyche is constructed, including an idea of how consciousness emerged as a part of it. The author demonstrates that Jung's concept of a collective unconscious structured by archetypes meshes well with accepted views of evolution and can be squared with the most rigorous science of today. So taken, Jung's work is of unrivaled explanatory power and opens new vistas for understanding who we are and how we function.

The concept of 'Archteypes' and the hypothesis of 'A Collective Unconscious' are two of Jung's better known and most exciting ideas. In this volume - taken from the Collected Works and appearing in paperback for the first time - Jung describes and elaborates the two concepts. Three essays establish the theoretical basis which are then followed by essays on specific archetypes. The relation of these to the process of individuation is examined in the last section. The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious is one of Jung's central works. There are many illustrations in full colour.
