Extracellular Vesicles In Health And Disease written by Paul Harrison and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-02 with Medical categories.

Interest in the role of extracellular vesicles (microvesicles and exosomes) is expanding rapidly. It is now apparent that far from being merely cellular debris, these vesicles play a key role in cell-to-cell communication and signaling. Moreover, they are significantly elevated in a number of diseases. This raises the question of their direct role in pathogenesis as well as their possible use as biomarkers. This book stems from the first international meeting on "Microvesicles and Nanovesicles in Health and Disease" held at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 2010. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together, for the first time, a range of experts from around the world to discuss the latest advances in this field. Key to the study of these vesicles is the availability of methodologies for their measurement in biological fluids. A major section of the meeting focused on a range of exciting new technologies which have been developed for this purpose. The presentations at this meeting form the basis of this book, which will appeal to basic scientists, clinicians, and those developing technology for the measurement of extracellular vesicles.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation With Stata Fourth Edition written by William Gould and has been published by Stata Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-27 with Mathematics categories.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation with Stata, Fourth Edition is written for researchers in all disciplines who need to compute maximum likelihood estimators that are not available as prepackaged routines. Readers are presumed to be familiar with Stata, but no special programming skills are assumed except in the last few chapters, which detail how to add a new estimation command to Stata. The book begins with an introduction to the theory of maximum likelihood estimation with particular attention on the practical implications for applied work. Individual chapters then describe in detail each of the four types of likelihood evaluator programs and provide numerous examples, such as logit and probit regression, Weibull regression, random-effects linear regression, and the Cox proportional hazards model. Later chapters and appendixes provide additional details about the ml command, provide checklists to follow when writing evaluators, and show how to write your own estimation commands.

One quarter of UK deaths are from cancer, and the large majority of these tumours initially present to primary care. The aim of the book is to inform primary care clinicians about the way cancer presents to primary care, and how they can select patients for investigation. It includes chapters on screening, systemic symptoms (which may be present with a number of cancers), and the terms used in cancer epidemiology. A final section of 'case-studies' offers an important opportunity for teaching or self-assessment. Co-edited by an academic GP and a primary care methodologist, thus ensuring it is perfectly tailored to primary care Multi-contributor in nature, ensuring that the most up-to-date information on each cancer is accurately provided Includes latest research findings Discusses reorganisation of cancer diagnostics Explores changes in cancer screening Clarifies everyday diagnostic difficulties, lessening the chance of GPs missing a malignancy Improves appropriateness of patient care Improves risk management skills Gives 'spin free' facts in an accessible, easy writing style Avoids unnecessary jargon Gives guidance on the NICE guidelines Covers all of the major cancers Case studies included which can be used for CME/revalidation

The Exiles And Other Stories written by Horacio Quiroga and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-15 with Fiction categories.

Tales of risk and danger, suffering, disease, horror, and death. Tales, also, of courage and dignity, hard work, and human endurance in the face of hostile nature and the frequent brutality of men. And tales flavored with piquant touches of humor and bemused irony. These are the stories of the Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga, here presented in an important compilation of thirteen of his most compelling tales, sensitively selected and translated by J. David Danielson. Author of some two hundred pieces of fiction, often compared to the works of Kipling, Jack London, and Edgar Allan Poe, Quiroga set many of his stories in the territory of Misiones in northeastern Argentina, the subtropical jungle region where he spent much of his life. Included here are stories from Los desterrados (1926) often said to be his best book, as well as others from Cuentos de amor de locura y de muerte (1917), Anaconda (1921), and El Desierto (1924). The publication of this selection marks the first appearance in English of all but two of the thirteen stories. Quiroga here presents a wide range of characters: parents and children, servant girls and prostitutes, landowners and lumber barons, foremen and laborers, natives and immigrants, in stories pervaded by a vision of life that is elemental, incisive, and essentially tragic. The Exiles and Other Stories shows the versatility and skill that have made him a classic Spanish American writer. It complements and illumines The Decapitated Chicken and Other Stories, selected and translated by Margaret Sayers Peden, also published by the University of Texas Press.

Growth In Transition written by Friedrich Hinterberger and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Business & Economics categories.

Stimulating growth through adjusting macroeconomic conditions remains the principal policy responses to pressing problems of unemployment, poverty and environmental degradation. However, are the current policy approaches capable of tackling these problems by generating win-win solutions or are they the root causes of these problems? The current growth trajectory has neither lead to a reduction of our overall resource use – as we use resources and energy more efficiently we consume more – nor create the conditions for employment and well-being. Increasingly, there is the realization that it is necessary to make substantial interventions into our national economies and create better framework conditions and incentive systems in order to more widely and rapidly develop and disseminate workable, innovative solutions for realizing sustainable development. This is the task of politics, and the concrete design of the measures must be built upon a broad public debate and shared long-term visions. The authors of this book intend to trigger a dialogue among stakeholders about how we can shape this transformation process towards sustainability. Following a detailed presentation of the key arguments for reconsidering the necessary conditions for sustainable economies, an international cast of commentators from politics, administration, civil society, business and science engage with the central question: is there an alternative trajectory for Western economies that sustains wellbeing whilst confronting ecological and social breakdown?

Seaweed Polysaccharides: Isolation, Biological, and Biomedical Applications examines the isolation and characterization of algal biopolymers, including a range of new biological and biomedical applications. In recent years, significant developments have been made in algae-based polymers (commonly called polysaccharides), and in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, wound dressings, and tissue engineering. Demand for algae-based polymers is increasing and represent a potential—very inexpensive—resource for these applications. The structure and chemical modification of algal polymers are covered, as well as the biological properties of these materials – including antithrombic, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, and antiviral aspects. Toxicity of algal biopolymers is also covered. Finally, the book introduces and explains real world applications of algal-based biopolymers in biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biosensors. This is the first book to cover the extraction techniques, biomedical applications, and the economic perspective of seaweed polysaccharides. It is an essential text for researchers and industry professionals looking to work with this renewable resource. Provides comprehensive coverage of the research currently taking place in biomedical applications of algae biopolymers Includes practical guidance on the isolation, extraction, and characterization of polysaccharides from sustainable marine sources Covers the extraction techniques, biomedical applications, and economic outlook of seaweed polysaccharides
