Tzara - who himself coined the term "Dada," inspired by an obscure connection of his birthday to an Orthodox saint - was at the Cabaret Voltaire that night, along with fellow Romanians Marcel, Jules, and Georges Janco and Arthur Segal. It's not a coincidence, Sandqvist argues, that so many of the first dadaist group was Romanians. Sandqvist traces the artistic and personal transformations that took place in the "little Paris of the Balkans" before they took center stage elsewhere, finding sources as varied as symbolism, futurism, and folklore. Cuando fundé el Cabaret Voltaire, era yo de la opinión que en Suiza tendría que haber algunos jóvenes que igual que yo estarían interesados no sólo en gozar de su propia independencia, sino también en documentarla. Fui a ver al señor Ephraim el propietario de “La Lechería” y le dije: “Por favor, señor Ephraim, deme su sala. Quiero abrir un cabaret.” El señor Ephraim estuvo de acuerdo y me dio la sala. Y fui al encuentro de algunos conocidos y les rogué: “Por favor, deme un cuadro, un dibujo, un grabado. Quiero unir una pequeña exposición a mi cabaret.” Fui a la amable prensa zuriguense y le rogué: “Publiquen ustedes algunas notas. Se abrirá un cabaret internacional. Queremos hacer bellas cosas.” Y me dieron cuadros y publicaron mis notas. El 5 de febrero teníamos un cabaret. Mde. Hennings y Mde. Leconte cantaron canciones francesas y danesas. El señor Tristan Tzara recitó versos rumanos. Una orquesta de balalaika tocó preciosas canciones populares rusas y bailes. Mucho apoyo y simpatía encontré en el señor Slodki que ideó el cartel del cabaret, en el señor Hans Arp que puso a mi disposición junto a trabajos propios, algunos Picassos y me gestionó cuadros de sus amigos O. van Rees y Artur Segall. Mucho apoyo de parte de Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco y Max Oppenheimer que se declararon a gusto dispuestos a actuar en el cabaret. Organizamos una Soirée RUSA y poco después una francesa (con obras de Apollinaire, Max Jacob, André Salmón, A. Jarry, Laforgue y Rimbaud). El 26 de febrero vino Richard Huelsenbeck de Berlín y el 30 de marzo ofrecimos una maravillosa música de negros (toujours avec la grosse caisse: boum boum boum boum – drabatija mo gere drabatja mo bonooooooooooooooo-) Monsieur Laban asistió a la función y estaba entusiasmado. Y por iniciativa del señor Tristan Tzara, los señores Tzara, Huelsenbeck y Janco presentaron (por primera vez en Zúrich y en todo el mundo) versos simultáneos de los señores Henri Barzun y Fernand Divoire, así como un poema simultáneo de composición propia, que está impreso en la página 6 y 7. El pequeño cuaderno que hoy publicamos lo debemos a nuestra iniciativa y a la ayuda de nuestros amigos en Francia, ITALIA y Rusia. Debe caracterizar la actividad y los intereses del cabaret, que pone toda su intención en recordar, más allá de las guerras y de las patrias, a los pocos independientes que viven otros ideales. La próxima meta de los artistas aquí reunidos es la publicación de una revista internacional. La revista saldrá en Zúrich y llevará el nombre “DADA” (“Dada”) Dada Dada Dada Dada. HUGO BALL.
