Furniture manufacturers today have to deal with the conflicting objectives of increased product variety with reduced lead-time and inventory levels. The prevalentsentiment in the industry is a build to order production strategy, which tends to increase the production costs. Furniture makers are hence looking for technologicalsolutions to counter these issues. Fixture-less machining on CNC routers is an alternative gaining prominence among manufacturers to reduce setup times andincrease productivity. However, in the absence of locating pins for mounting the parts, the orientation and part placement becomes critical and small errors canincrease rejection rates. Updating the CNC part programs after determining the exact orientation and location of the part blanks is a likely solution. This thesisrepresents an effort to develop a computer vision based system to enable this. Some of the popular techniques in computer vision for object recognition were henceimplemented. These however did not prove worthwhile as the efficacy of the algorithms was undermined by the texture from wood grains. A template matchingprocedure was identified as being better suited for the purpose because of its inherent tolerance for noise. The generation of the template to account for hidden linesand actual projected lengths, both functions of the viewing direction and camera location, was however the biggest challenge. The fact that most furnituremanufacturers have a very large product range that needs machining on the router compounds the problem. A novel CAD based template generation algorithm washence proposed and implemented. The developed algorithms enabled orientation determination with a negligible error, and the average error in locating the part wasless than 0.2 percent. The approach was therefore found to have a potential in reducing the lead times while specifying tighter tolerances to reduce raw-materialconsumption. Finally, some future work to completely automate the process and to e.

DEFECT PROPORTION OF DETECTION INITIAL RATE DETECTION RATE INSPECTOR 3 COMPLEXITY OF TIMES PAN OF PERFORMING o~ ________________________ o~ ______________________ __ -;. INSPECTION TASK -;. VISUAL INSPECTION Fagure 1. Trends in relations between the complexity of inspection tasks, defect detection rates (absolute and relative), and inspection time. Irrespective of the necessities described above, and with the excep tion of specific generic application systems (e.g., bare-board PCB inspection, wafer inspection, solder joint inspection, linewidth measure ment), vision systems are still not found frequently in today's electronics factories. Besides cost, some major reasons for this absence are: 1. The detection robustness or accuracy is still insufficient. 2. The total inspection time is often too high, although this can frequently be attributed to mechanical handling or sensing. 3. There are persistent gaps among process engineers, CAD en gineers, manufacturing engineers, test specialists, and computer vision specialists, as problems dominate the day-to-day interac tions and prevent the establishment of trust. 4. Computer vision specialists sometimes still believe that their contributions are universal, so that adaptation to each real problem becomes tedious, or stumbles over the insufficient availabIlity of multidisciplinary expertise. Whether we like it or not, we must still use appropriate sensors, lighting, and combina tions of algorithms for each class of applications; likewise, we cannot design mechanical handling, illumination, and sensing in isolation from each other.

The purpose of computer vision is to make computers capable of understanding environments from visual information. Computer vision has been an interesting theme in the field of artificial intelligence. It involves a variety of intelligent information processing: both pattern processing for extraction of meaningful symbols from visual information and symbol processing for determining what the symbols represent. The term "3D computer vision" is used if visual information has to be interpreted as three-dimensional scenes. 3D computer vision is more challenging because objects are seen from limited directions and some objects are occluded by others. In 1980, the author wrote a book "Computer Vision" in Japanese to introduce an interesting new approach to visual information processing developed so far. Since then computer vision has made remarkable progress: various rangefinders have become available, new methods have been developed to obtain 3D informa tion, knowledge representation frameworks have been proposed, geometric models which were developed in CAD/CAM have been used for computer vision, and so on. The progress in computer vision technology has made it possible to understand more complex 3 D scenes. There is an increasing demand for 3D computer vision. In factories, for example, automatic assembly and inspection can be realized with fewer con straints than conventional ones which employ two-dimensional computer vision.

This book contains 26 papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "CAD Based Programming for Sensory Robots," held in IL CIOCCa, Italy, July 4-6, 1988. CAD based robot programming is considered to be the process where CAD (Computer Based) models are used to develop robot programs. If the program is generated, at least partially, by a programmer interacting, for example, with a computer graph i c d sp i 1 ay of the robot and its workce 11 env ironment, the process is referred to as graphical off-line programming. On the other hand, if the robot program is generated automatically, for example, by a computer, then the process is referred to as automatic robot programmi ng. The key element here is the use of CAD models both for interact i ve and automat i c generat i on of robot programs. CAD based programmi ng, therefore, bri ngs together computer based model i ng and robot programmi ng and as such cuts across several discipl ines including geometric model ing, robot programming, kinematic and dynamic modeling, artificial intelligence, sensory monitoring and so-on.

Machine vision technology has created a strong interest among research organizations, resulting in many innovative products. Despite this end users have been very skeptical towards machine vision and its robustness in harsh industrial environments. This book presents the results of a national machine vision technology program aimed at boosting research and putting research results to work in practical industrial applications. The topics to be covered include image acquisition, analysis of surface color and texture, applications of machine vision in surface inspection and process control, 3-D measurements, and CAD-based machine vision.
