A photographic portrait of the oldest coffeehouse in Italy. Caffe Florian in St. Mark's Square has always been the high-society "drawing room" of Venice. And Gianni Berengo Gardin, an adoptive Venetian, has always had close ties with the city where he began his career. This book is the result of his photographing a week in the life of the historic cafe which boasts habitues from the past such as Casanova and Byron. Berengo Gardin has sat in his usual discreet fashion on the plush small red divans in Florian's and captured around forty timeless moments from everyday life. The black-and-white images provide a wonderful insight into the reality of Florian's, which is about to celebrate three hundred years of glorious social life. In fact, the cafe was opened under the Procuratie Nuove by Floriano Francesconi in 1720. Now a major photographer has prepared a magnificent birthday gift for a place that has seen centuries of history.

The World Of Caffeine written by Bennett Alan Weinberg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-23 with History categories.

Caffeine is the world's most popular drug! Almost all of us start our day with a jolt of caffeine from coffee, tea or cola. And many of us crave chocolate when we're stressed or depressed. Without it we're lethargic, head-achy and miserable. Why? Why do we crave caffeine? How much do we really know about our number one drug of choice? Here is the first natural, cultural, and artistic history of our favorite mood enhancer--how it was discovered, its early uses, and the unexpected parts it has played in medicine, religion, painting, poetry, learning, and love. Weinberg and Bealer tell an intriguing story of a remarkable substance that has figured prominently in the exchanges of trade and intelligence among nations and whose most common sources, coffee, tea, and chocolate, have been both promoted as productive of health and creativity and banned as corrupters of the body and mind or subverters of social order. Some Highlights From the World of Caffeine Balzac's addiction to caffeine drove him to eat coffee, as some schizophrenic patients are observed to do today, and may have killed him Mary Tuke breaks the male monopoly on tea in England in 1725 The ways caffeine functions as a smart pill Goethe's responsibility for the discovery of caffeine Did a mini Ice Age help bring coffee, tea and chocolate to popularity in Europe? What is the mystery of coffee's origin? As good as gold: the stories of how caffeine, in its various forms, was used as cash in China, Africa, Central America and Egypt What does the civet cat have to do with the most costly coffee on earth today? The World of Caffeine is a captivating tale of art and society -- from India to Balzac to cybercafes -- and the ultimate caffeine resource.

The Human Comedy is the title of Honoré de Balzac's multi-volume collection of interlinked novels and stories depicting French society in the period of the Restoration (1815–1830) and the July Monarchy (1830–1848). Balzac organized his works into 3 groups: "Etudes de Moeurs au XIXe siècle" (Studies of Manners in the 19th Century) + "Etudes philosophiques" + "Etudes analytiques". Balzac wrote that the "Etudes de Moeurs" would study the effects of society and touch on all genders, social classes, ages and professions of people. Meanwhile, the "Etudes philosophiques" would study the causes of these effects. Finally, the third "analytical" section would study the principles behind these phenomena. Dante's Convivio, written 1304-07, is the first major prose document in the Italian language. This new translation is based on the recent Italian critical edition of Maria Simonelli and includes as well the text of the three Italian canzoni. Using approaches from cultural and social history, traces the psychological, social, intellectual, and moral development of the 19th century American novelist, and examines the middle-class values and behavior that shaped him, and which he portrayed with such discomfort in his mature work.
