"Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.), among legumes, has an important role in the diet of many people in the world. It is one of the oldest food crops. It is the sixth most important legume crop. Pigeon pea is rich in protein, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber, and a rich source of other bioactive components. Pigeon pea is a good source of dietary fiber and is low in fat, which helps in the maintenance of body weight and reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cytoplasmic male-sterility (CMS) refers to the condition in plants where they fail to produce functional pollen. In Chapter 1, the authors briefly discuss cytoplasmic-male sterility and its utilization in hybrid breeding in plants. Then they describe a historical overview of the discovery of male-sterility in pigeon pea. Next, a retrospective view on the major CMS systems developed and their use in commercial hybrid seed production in pigeon pea is presented. Finally, genomic approaches for stimulating pigeon pea hybrid breeding are briefly discussed. In Chapter 2, the authors focus on the pharmacological and medicinal properties of pigeon pea. Next, the chemical composition of pigeon pea, its nutritional value, phytochemical components, health benefits and its usefulness in formulating functional foods is examined. In the final and fourth chapter, the cultivation, uses and other important nutritional information about this important legume is explored"--

Cajanus cajan, (Pigeon pea or Red gram) finds an important place in the farming systems adopted by the small and marginal farmers in large number of developing countries. It has the potentials of multipurpose usage. It is mainly used as a human food because of its high nutritive value. It is evident that the various parts of the Cajanus cajan plant are exploited for their economic importance and it has also been to have medicinal and aromatic properties. The alternate and novel approach for the improvement of this crop is to complement the traditional breeding with tissue culture techniques to regenerate plants from single cells and organized tissues. Having known about this significance, standardization of protocols of tissue cultures, biochemical assays and molecular analysis, would serve as a prime step of the genetic engineering experiments. Therefore this text is particularly emphasized for the development of a procedure by which plants can be regenerated from single cells and organized tissues are essentially required for genetic engineering of Cajanus cajan.

Pigeonpea is an important high protein grain legume of the semi-arid tropics and caters to the protein requirement all over the world. Improvement of pigeonpea cultivars possessing resistance to pests and diseases, tolerance to abiotic stresses and low allergenic proteins in seeds is desirable. The use of transformation techniques for producing new breeding materials that would not be available in the germplasm among cross-compatible species holds much promise in attaining this goal. Genetic improvement of this crop through biotechnological methods has not yet been achieved mainly due to non-availability of standardized transformation techniques. To develop transgenic plants, standardizing methods of regeneration is equally important. Keeping this in view, in vitro regeneration techniques were standardized employing three different genotypes of pigeonpea and different explants of pigeonpea. Agrobacterium mediated transfer was used in transformation studies with different explants of all three genotypes.
